In Skyrim, it's all just paragraphs of exposition lazily thrown in there because they couldn't think of a way to integrate it into the actual game.

Like, don't get me wrong. I did have fun playing Skyrim but that doesn't make it a good game. It was mindless popcorn filler that gave me something to do while waiting for better releases. It was an entertaining enough romp but it's FAR from #1 RPG of all time material.

Wasn't that supposed to be the system where NPCs would dynamically generate quests that related to their day-to-day life and were supposed to be unique? Did that ever actually get implemented because I legit can't remember ever getting jack shit for random quests from NPCs. Like, I know that in actuality (coming from Bethesda, at any rate) such a system would ultimately mean random NPCs randomly come up with random fetch quests but I seriously don't even remember having that much happen.

It's not a great RPG.

I think that as a game, it's fine. It's not phenomenal by any means, but it's not really horrible or anything.

The RPG elements are limited HEAVILY by lack of player choice in 99% of the quests. The main questline has absolutely no player choice whatsoever, 3 of the big 4 faction questlines have no player choice whatsoever (and I'm only counting the dark brotherhood because you can just kill them all, shit choice but it's still there at least). Almost every fucking NPC is unkillable. Especially the Jarls and main faction leaders which makes the game complete shit when you can't assassinate leaders which is the most fun thing to do because they're apparently gods or something.

The only real player choice is really 'how you feel like fighting'. There's a number of different weapons and armors to use, but it pales in comparison to games OF IT'S OWN SERIES.

Skyrim is a dogshit RPG, but as a whole game it's fine. It's a 6/10. Also the dragon fights suck ass.

Weird, the most widely beloved and best selling RPG of the last decade or more is called the #1 RPG.

Think about it though: when people make these lists, it's incredibly unlikely that those who made it were exposed to a great many RPGs in any capacity. The way game journalism works now, it's possible that people who never played RPGs contributed to the list.
With that in mind, the list is about filling a quota: they need a certain number of revered classics, picks from other lists, and what's popular in gamer circles. As we get closer to the top of the list, the included what they think are all "perfect 10/10" games, so the placing is more arbitrary because they think it doesn't matter.

Why go through all this trouble to fake knowledge of RPGs? Same reason every Top list is ever made: to bring in clicks.

I thought it was fun. It was a great world to explore early on and it definitely instilled a sense of grandeur that mods were able to renew after 50 to 60 hours of play time. Never played it or really saw much other than the webms posted here. Is there customization in gear, stats/perks, character play styles? Can you level up? I'm not gonna get into a meme war here.

I really like The Elder Scrolls. The game play has it's pros and cons with each game but the one thing that I really like and that keeps me coming back is the world itself. Not even getting into deep lore, it's the only rpg franchise that personally appeals to me and I don't know why TES does but most others don't really do much for me (with exceptions of course).

And for a good portion of Skyrim, I didn't play with mods. Hell, I only did the main quest once to get it done because I spend all of my time actually rping in the game. And after over a hundred hours of vanilla, I put mods in to tweak things.

Radiant quests where repeatable quests you get from guilds which had cookie cutter objectives like "go to x dungeon and bring back x item" the x's being randomized each time. The minor objectives like you mentioned aren't radiant and are just canned fetch quest shit. Unfortunately because they can put "unlimited quests!" on the back of the box, they don't bother putting actually interesting or well put together quests in the game anymore. The judging factors are too vague to ever really declare one.

Now if they removed the numbering and simply wanted to group games like "Best JRPGs/WRPGs of the 90s/00s/10s" or "Most influential rpgs of their respective decades" then I could get behind a title like Skyrim being listed at the top. Because while I intensely dislike what Skyrim as a game represented (that putting effort into an RPG is not worth it, simply make it wide as an ocean but shallow as a puddle and hype it to death and we'll do just fine), I won't deny that is wildly influential. Just... negatively.

In a more positive vein, FF7 to the late 90s, early 00s. The data and industry history shows that FF7 so dramatically affected the fortunes of jrpgs and their positive reception that I could easily see it topping a list of influence. So many games got the greenlight to be made or localized based purely off of the insane goodwill that FF7 bought that genre.

No game that is as buggy or unpolished as Skyrim or FO4 deserves a 9 or 10. Bethesda gets a free pass with the exception of that recent IGN Prey review but they only published that not developed.

Lets not forget the PS3 had a game breaking bug in Skyrim where performance would slowly deteriorate after 60-80+ hours of gameplay until your save file became unplayable. Unless you think single digit FPS is playable. This was also never patched but funny how this was hardly mentioned from the big review sites.

That's what i think. For me Skyrim is the best game of all time hands down, not perfect, at all, but only because you can install mods for it, mods that fix stuff in it and of course mods that add tons of stuff too. Without them it's a solid 8/10. I remember when /v/ called it the blunder of the century when it was released and i was like "the fuck are these faggots talking about?".

Since then, if /v/ calls a game a blunder, for me it means "i need to check it out".
