Look up the Chiappa Rhino, the hammer 'spur' is high up as well. The location of the spur doesn't necessarily indicate where it impacts the firing pin.

Not defending Destiny's firearm design, not really a fan, but the hammer and firing from the bottom cylinder aren't really the issues.

/k/ can get triggered by any game with guns in it if they get too autistic about it.
Anyways:
>Put Qs bullet into pistol

I mean, it is 500 years in the future, and some of the lore does mention advanced recoil mitigation systems in the context of their shotguns (which are almost all 8 guage). The MA5 series (which occupies a role similar to what the M4 does today) also fires 7.62, which is simlarly oversized.

Also, even if the recoil mitigation stuff isn't clarified on a lot in the EU, materials science IS touched on a lot, and it's well established that highly ballistically resistant body armor is commonplace, here's like 10 different types of personal body armor in the lore just from the first few novels alone not counting the power armor; so it also makes sense from a armor-round arms race perspective that larger/power powerful rounds re in use to compensate.

I actually distinctly recall in the fall of reach it's outright stated when BLUE team is out on one of their first missions against inssurectionsts before they get MJOLNIR, even just wearing run of the mill modern UNSC marine gear, a lot of the rounds from innie guns just deflect off of their body armor because they were using less powerful cartridges that were standard in like the 2300's.

Eh, it's consistent with the UNSC's visual design with their spaceships, vehicles, and other, more creative weapons.

Before anybody freaks out at the lack of sights, electronic heads up displays are standard amongst all UNSC forces, either via an eyepiece, or built into combat goggles/visors, and the box with the display on the gun is an electronics suite that links up with that for aiming.

It's also removable, and if removed, there are normal iron sights underneath just in case.

>>377069017
5's campaign is about as bad as 4's, but the MP is some of the best in the series and the forge/custom game settings are near dev tool level powerful in terms of what they can do.

There's scripting, weather and time of day stuff, limited texture editing, placable sound and visual effects like sparks and fire, you can swap any weapon's projectiles with each other for Halo 2 modded lobby esque shennangians, there are saveable and loadbale prefabs and object groups, and a ton of other shit.

>Sorry anon, i'm not /k/ enough to comment, but I am autistically into halo lore, so if you explain what that means I might be able to give context
Happy to oblige.

You see on the ar-15, the charging handle, (that is, the handle you use to pull back the bolt back, eject any spent brass or loaded cartridges in the chamber and cock the hammer and release to chamber a new round from the magazine) is what's known as "Non reciprocating." Non reciprocating means that as the bolt travels back and forth in normal function of the firearm, the charging handle stays put. This is done so that the charging handle does not smack the operator in the face. However. As a result, this means if the bolt does not travel forward enough to fully chamber a round, if for some reason the bolt does not fully chamber a round, you cannot use the charging handle to push the bolt forward the rest of the way. The gun won't discharge in this state, so while safe, it does mean the gun won't operate and will malfunction if the operator tries to pull the trigger. So what happens when you need to push the bolt the rest of the way in?

The forward assist was invented to help what they felt as a solution to this problem. It fits into little grooves or, "serrations" cut into the bolt at the rear of the bolt. This button is spring-loaded on the side of the receiver and pushes in, catches, pushes the bolt, then comes back so that it never interferes with the bolt (under normal conditions) only when the button is depressed does it make contact with the bolt. Thus, you can push on the bolt with this button. Essentially, the serrations are cut into the bolt so the forward assist can push the bolt the rest of the way in. Of course recently, that has changed, but that's another story.
>>
>>377070875
It feels like after the war they would have had enough to play with and build something like at least a UNSC Plasma Pistol variant since that's arguably their most note worthy infantry weapon.
>>
>>377069901

Pictured is the forward assist.

These days, a lot of these are going the way of the dodo for a lot of reasons. The reason I have been told is because, "if the bolt is not moving into battery completely, a malfunction has occurred which should not be corrected by forcing it into battery."

That may or may not be a direct quote.
>>
>>377071061
You would think that, but Humanity was also extremely fucked up after the war. Before the war they had around 40 bilion people and were reduced to around 16 billion after. I know the reverse engineering gave us MJOLNIR and The Infinity, but the comeback halo 4 and 5 shoe always seemed a little to fast for me. What was the reasoning behind ending the human covenant war? After that it felt like they had to start going crazy with the power level since humans were already starting to eclipse covenant tech. They should've just kept it more gradual and kept the conflict going

Some bolts will travel quite a ways forward or rearward to extract, eject and strip a mag.

But it has to have enough room for the length of the bolt behind the length of the feed lips on the magazine. Which it doesn't appear to have enough room to fully travel backwards.

>>377071552
>ut the comeback halo 4 and 5 shoe always seemed a little to fast for me
This.

343 isn't as bad as people say, generally, but they cannot advance the state of the universe well to save their lives. They rush, completely blow/run plot points into the ground, and introduce new galactic threats way too quickly.

>>377070995
>>377071362
I can't think of any lore reason for it to be like that off the top of my head. In general, malfunctions for UNSC weapons doesn't come up all that often, presumbly because in the 500 years between now reliability issues have mostly been wokred out.

If I had to guess, the artist probably didn't really think about it. But it's also possible that myabe there's some obscure note/reason for it, the original designer for most of the UNSC weapons was a gun nut and did have not of autistic reasons for things, we just only have the ones mentioned in the first artbook.
>>
>>377071632
The power creep is more 343 lore than anything. If I remember correctly, had earth fallen and the schism not happened, ONI was estimating the last colonies would be dead within a year. Humanity was technically eclipsing the covenant on a small scale but overall the covenant were still vastly superior. The war had been going on for years and all they really had was shield tech that could only be used by perfect humans groomed from birth to do it. Humanity was also losing resources and the ability to produce ships after Reach Fell, so anything they could make better than the covenant probably couldn't be mass produced.

You got to remember the UNSC also lost its main industrial hub and loads of R&D facilities on Reach

>>377071632

because you "finished the fight"

But frankly yeah, they should have kept it going. Even if the elites and UNSC struck a temporary alliance against the prophets/brutes or flood, theres zero reason for that alliance to persist once the events of the original trilogy have transpired. elites led the fleets and armies which fucking genocided over half the human race in an insane crusade. you're telling me there's no serious, worldwide bad feeling over that, just because a single charismatic elite ruler was like "lol nah, were buds now"? at best you'd be talking a Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact type situation where both sides agree to put their grievances on hold for the time being so they can scramble for a better position.

I thought Halo 5 might kind of lean in this direction with its Sanghelios plotline and the arbiter still trying to consolidate his power, but somehow i doubt 343i will manage to do anything with this that is not just fucking retarded

I figured it had something about the crystal grains in the lenses being anatomically/angstrom-level arranged to act as a perfect lens for focusing. The heat and excitation from the beam would mess up their alignment making them useful only once before they no longer focused properly and needed to be swapped out.
>>
>>377072131
The funny thing is, like I said, even today we still use the bolt serrations even though a lot of people view the forward assist on the m16/ar15 to be unnecessary.

I will point this out. The bolt in that rifle looks _remarkably_ similar to the ar-15 one. So it could be that they're still using the same bolt and all this time they haven't switched machining because tooling up for it would cost too much. That's MY guess.

There's actually a triology of novels that focuses on ONI preventing exactly what you describe from happening by fueling civil wars on sangehelios to keep the elites busy and focus on fighting each other rather then on humanity.

Of course, they fuck up, all the stuff they armed the various elite factions with to fight each other gets collected by a elite warlord, who is the leader of the covenant spliner faction you fight in 4 and 5.

Most people consider them to be the weaknest halo novels, but the first 2 IMO are alright, if a bit flawed. Only the third is actually bad.

Helical and rotary magazines are neat. 10 round factory magazine for the ruger 10/22, while looking like a small box magazine and fitting flush, is in fact a rotary magazine and is pretty clever.

>>377072560
Clearly some kind of rotary or helical magazine, yes. But once again, the bolt has to go all the way back so the bolt head is behind the first cartridge on the feed lips of the magazine. Essentially, all magazines once they reach the feed lips kinda feed the same way. It lines up the cartridge in the feed slot to be facing the same direction as the bolt - towards the chamber.

The bolt has to get behind the round that will be chambered.

See image for an example.

UNSC orbital platforms are also built around the MAC cannons, except they are much fucking bigger. The entire first mission of Halo 2 takes place on this station, and you can see a frigate docked into it for scale as well.

The one section with the giant tower and the moving platform in the mission was actually the cannon and reloading mechanism moving.

They wouldn't counteract each other, but using either one correctly would make the other pointless. Muzzle brake before the suppressor would release the noise of a normal gunshot, making the suppressor irrelevant. And if a suppressor is working correctly then release of gasses would be slow enough that the muzzle brake would have no really effect. There are muzzle brakes that server as the attach point and suppressors screw onto. Don't know if that's relevant that that weapon though.

There's a interactive series of like 30 scale charts that show the relative sizes of stuff as big as solar system sized megastructures to as small and mundane as the random boxes and decroative objects littered across the single player campaigns in the Halo games as well as the EU.

It's pretty damn cool, even if it's 3 years out of date to current stuff, link to it is here: http://halo.bungie.org/misc/sloftus_scalecomparison/1280h.html

$175, and honestly it feels okay so far. The magazine is already 500 rounds. You could easily kill a whole militia with that shit. The gun can only fire 36 rounds a time though. It's semi-auto feature functions as a shotgun with tight spread.
If you think the Typhoon is bad, you should see the "M.I.K.E." in Crysis 3. Literally a microwave that kills players in 2 seconds while wearing fire and heat resistant armor.

For the Halo nerds in here, is there a reason that the UNSC did not use/salvage more of the Jackals portable shields? I mean from what I remember of the novels, those were the original bases of the Spartan Armor's regen shield? There was even a moment where one of the Spartans used the jackal shield but when it overloaded I think it burned their wrist. But even at the risk of burning your arm from the overload, why not make more for the normal infantry? I mean I would think it was more expensive to make the spartan armor with regen shield but normal portable shields like that would be a boon when advancing in close quarters or just having a semblance of protection against plasma weaponry.

As a kid when Halo 2 was coming out and the introduction of dual wielding and the plasma sword, I really hoped you could have used the jackal shield in combination with the plasma sword for some melee hijinks.

AK5B as I got to use was the sturdier of the assault rifles that I got to try (M16 ( believe it was AN american M series weapon, felt a bit plastic) and got to try an AK47- But other than that AK5B is a shit weapon. It will jam when it reaches -20 Celsius and the retractable coil sucks ass.

Store it in the fucking magazines? It would be a bitch to load them but did you even watch the video. The magazine is maybe the size of two conventional 30 round ones. Sure the weapon and ammo would be heavy but it isn't like it's 500 rounds of intermediate caliber ammunition, it's fucking minuscule.

More ammunition in a smaller 'footprint'.

Technically the size and weight of hte magazine is larger than a traditional one, but the capacity they offer (anywhere from 50 to 150 rounds depending on which gun we're talking about) would require a large drum that would sit below the gun.

On the Calico it sits up and back, in line with the gun, on the old Bizon it sits in line with the grip. The biggest draw back is they have a tendency to misfeed. They're also very expensive to make and a pain in the dick to reload.

Here's some Norks with overfolding AKs that have helical mags. If they had the same capacity with more traditional magazines, the drums would be much larger and less weidly. The prevailing opinion on these is they're intended for paratroopers.

Yes, they would. Generally drum mags are only used in the gun at first, and after being expended they switch to standard magazines.

Drum mags are generally not used in militaries because of the extra weight and cost. Soviet's stopped issuing 75 round drums to RPK gunners pretty early on.

>>377111265
Magazine fed revolvers were a real thing. "Revolver Cannons" are actually used on a large number of aircraft and work basically the same way.
>>
>>377072071
>>377072342
Eh, more likely the heat would warp them out of focus and they'd need to be rotated for cooldown.

I'm not sure how grain-perfecting would even work; if anything you'd want to eliminate graining entirely and have a single crystal since grain boundaries scatter light (as well as thermal/vibrational/electrical signals). And I don't think heat would fuck that up, not unless it precipitated the growth of new grain/s around the edges of the lenses but this is highly unlikely since grain boundaries are crystallographic imperfections and would thus have a thermodynamic cost associated with forming them out of nowhere such as in a perfect crystal.

>>377084207
Idk, I liked it. It had a distinct appearance and made a nice bridge between the WW2 tech and the more fantastical/archaic tech in the game's verse. The imperial's combat uniform for example is canonically old medieval armour that is inferior against bullets, but was kept because of its appearance. You could argue that Gallia didn't bother making a modern bazooka because they're a much smaller country that didn't really have weapons R&D until they got invaded, so they too still use Lances for the war. Plus having the warhead on the end of a stick justified why the damn things couldn't aim for shit.

Vc2 and 3 added more weapon anachronism by way of a playable sword and board class, and a class that wielded a warhammer and an expanding bullet-proof shield. Those games also added an enemy that was so heavily armoured you couldn't displace them by running into them with a tank, who wielded a big shield, and wielded a gatling gun that could slice through armour.

If the franchise ever came back from the dead, I'd love to see late WW2 weaponry start to appear as late-game R&D unlocks or as capturable weapons. A bazooka or panzershrek'd would be pretty sweet in Gallian camouflage

Omolon guns. You still reload like normal guns because making new animations is hard, but when you reload it fills a glass bubble full of liquid thats visible on the gun and as you shoot it drains.

There are close to modern day equivalent weapons for the most part in the form of the Hakke manufacturer but even then its a bit of a stretch.
