I think 10 definitely had "it", the world is absolutely beautiful and vibrant, the water theme prevalent throughout the whole game is my favourite out of all of the Final Fantasies, and while it is lacking in a great deal of aspects, like characters, plot and exploration, it didn't soulless as later releases.

i think it might have something to do with voice acting. I was oblivious to the fucking faggotry in the dialogue until Tidus and his goofy fucking bravado. Also the way the animations moved. The attacks were clean cut back in the day. The rendered back grounds were so fucking beautiful. even in 16 bit
