>Almost 5 FUCKING MILLION for a Switch version
What the fucking hell are they thinking?
>>
>>377016243
I suspect their initial goal is actually a lot less than what it would take to make the game, and they're hoping the remainder will be made up in inflated stretch goals. They low-ball the base figure so that they might at least get -some- money if they fail to achieve their actual, secret goal.
>>
>>377016243
It's smart. They know Nintendo fans will fund it so they can prove the Switch is a real console.
>>
>>377016243
A $5 million budget is really small for a game. Remember when it cost a crazy amount to add just one character to Skullgirls? That wasn't an inflated cost just to squeeze more money out of people, that was the actual cost of the work required.

>>377016350
This is probably the case. They don't want to scare people away with the actual cost of the game so they're lowballing it, just so they can at least get some of what they need.
>>
>>377014513
>£19,106

Probably will get a boost when websites talk about it, and will probably barely make its initial budget, but it will fail to get stretch goals.

I think the price point coupled with the low interest in rhythm games/parappa, and mighty no. 9 ruining consumer trust will keep it from hitting anything big.

I think they should have had at least a bit of gameplay to show off as well. Yooka-Laylee, aside from art, at least had that going for them, and I think the game turned out fine. Concept art is good and all, but it then leads into the MN9 situation where people backed the game solely off of one piece of concept art, and then the game didn't follow through with the artstyle.

After taxes, kickstarter fees and reward fulfillment, they will probably only have half of that left, maybe 70% at best. So 770k US.

Then they have costs for office space and utilities, equipment and contract work, probably 100k at absolute least.

Lets assume a very modest core team size of 10 and a very quick development time of 1 year. They have 670k to divide between them, so that's a yearly salary of 67k each.

As a breakdown that's pretty reasonable, but in actual fact the game's requirements are probably multiple times higher than what I've given. 1 year will most likely not be enough time, and 10 people not enough staff. 1.1 million is most likely not even the game's full budget. It's probably something more like 3-4 million, with the publisher agreeing to provide the rest after the kickstarter demonstrates interest.

The stretch goals are scummy though, because they are clearly overinflated compared to the base game's goal. This is probably so that the publisher's contribution can be reduced if the stretch goals are reached, allowing them to bear less risk.

The days of Stewart Copeland tapping out a MIDI soundtrack all on his lonesome are long gone.

Doesn't kickstarter earn a partial profit from projects? if it drives people to back more, why would they go against it?

>Why are the funding and stretch goal targets so high?

This is a game we have dreamed of developing for a very long time, but with many publishers afraid to invest in the rhythm-action genre we’ve been unable to secure the funds to make Project Rap Rabbit at the quality we expect and you deserve. Ours is an ambitious project that requires us to design and perfect innovative mechanics and multiple songs, which is neither a cheap nor quick task to do right. Making this game for $500,000 wouldn’t be possible!

Though we would love to lower the targets – or do away with them altogether and just make Project Rap Rabbit without turning to Kickstarter - we need to be realistic about the costs involved in developing a AAA music game. While some other Kickstarter projects have been in a position where they were able to fund partly through Kickstarter and secure investment from outside sources, or have underestimated the goals needed to match their full ambition, we need to raise a large percentage of the full amount required to finish development and release Project Rap Rabbit.

This is your chance to prove to the industry that publishers have got it wrong: that there is still demand for story-led music games, and that the rhythm-action genre has a bright future.

No thanks. Never liked Parappa, but Gitaroo Man was cool.

Is the game going to miserably difficult unless you literally button mash the whole controller to dust? If so I'm in.

Big update FAQ I guess from feedback:

But what about Nintendo Switch? It wouldn’t take almost $4 million to port it.

Correct. We are building for four platforms while adding a game mode, extra difficulty (remember the cheerleader difficulty level in Elite Beat Agents?) and extra levels (a music game lives and dies by its levels of course!). We also must factor in the various fees and cost of goods to fulfill backer shipments (including console platform fees) and the Kickstarter platform fee to make sure we can safely meet our goals. We do NOT want to be in a position where we are fabricating low goals and then failing to deliver because of that. We need to be sensible about our development resources and ensure we neither bankrupt our development studios nor under deliver on our vision of making the most innovative rhythm-action title in generations.

The ordering and pricing structure of our Stretch Goals are designed to protect the quality of Project Rap Rabbit and the viability of our development studios, and are not driven by any other agenda. We are desperately keen to develop Project Rap Rabbit for all major formats, and are tremendously excited by Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch version is set to a higher tier as it requires game data to be specifically adapted for the console from the PS4 and PC versions due to the differing performance characteristics of that platform. Development of Project Rap Rabbit is well underway using Unreal Engine 4, which means we’re in a great position to port Project Rap Rabbit to Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Because of format architecture and studio experience, it’s easier and less expensive for us to initially focus on PS4 and PC versions, followed by an Xbox One title. We must be mindful of the costs needed for development kits and extra staff, and conscious of the fact that this will be our first title for Nintendo’s new console if we hit our Stretch Goal. It is important that we ensure Project Rap Rabbit is fully polished and perfected for every launch platform.

What happens if you don’t make the $1.1 million target?

We have turned to Kickstarter to secure the funding for Project Rap Rabbit. If we do not meet this goal we will, sadly, be unable to continue with development.

I'm going to play Russian Roulette here and help fund the kickstarter. I chose to back for a physical copy of the game, and will plan to get it on PS4. If it happens to reach the Switch goal, (which I doubt it will) I will probably choose the Switch version instead.

Whilst I know how this will likely end up, I think the developers of both Parappa and Gitaroo Man have a chance of making a way more appealing game than both Mighty No 9 and Yooka Laylee. Rap Rabbit seems to look quite different from it's successors in terms of concept, whilst still having the same sort of style.

I'm not hyped but I'm not gonna completely dismiss it out of hand, but part of what Gitaroo Man so fucking amazing was COIL's music and 326's art direction. Do we know if there's anyone special who's going to be involved in this project?
