Back then cards were judged by ATK AND DEF ratios. They still are but a lot less emphasized on how high their defense are, so we get less 1500-1800 ATK monsters ending up as 5-6 stars because of it having 1800-2000 DEF. Can someone explain what exactly this thing makes possible that makes it godawfully OP? To make a long story short:
Konami introduced a new card mechanic called Xyz. It allows you to put monsters on a stack (which is called overlaying) and put an black card card on it, which are Xyzs. The cards under the Xyz become its Xyz Materials, which can be used for the Xyz's card effect. Xyzs belong in your Extra Decks like Fusions and Synchros.

Zoodiacs are an archtype that allow you to summon brutally broken Xyzs that can search and summon other Zoodiacs with ease, and end with a floodgate that can pop a face-up card during either player's turn.

The thing about Xyzs is that you always need 2 specific monsters in order to summon it from your Extra Deck. Xyzs also don't have any levels so they can't be used as overlays as easily.

In the case of Zoodiacs, you only need 1 Zoodiac monster to summon a Zoodiac Xyz and Zoodiac Xyzs can be overlayed by other Zoodiacs Xyzs.

I thought /v/ was exaggerating as well, but when i saw the monsters you can summon with Xyz, i was surprised how powercrept the game has gone. There is just TOO many cards that summons from the graveyard and hand, making it for easy mass summon your extra deck. Doesn't matter if you have no cards and i destroyed your entire hand, next card you draw lets you summon like 2 monsters from graveyard and/deck and i'm back at stake 0.
Even despite all this, i could understand what they were tyring to do. They wanted people to use lowbie monsters more often. Same with synchro, instead of just the strongest effect or attack.

And then i played pendulum. What the fuck were they thinking? Not only you can mass summon your entire hand but you can mass summon your whole fucking extra deck, on top of it, all the cards you lose from battle goes back to extra and can be mass spammed again. I just stopped playing the game at that point.

Is it even possible to play a hard control deck in ygo? As far as I can tell, it looks like everything is all combo-aggro decks that get a ton of value off everything. If a semi decent control deck exists it might be worth learning the game.
