I've started recently and have been playing assistant for a day or two now, but I lack an objective

Ideas?

I got tired of playing sec and arresting the same 2-3 autists every round. I enjoy game play and the problem solving aspect of the game. But that gets old once you know all the tricks and can play optimally. I'm not a big enough loser to play for the social aspects although good RP is really the only thing that kept me around for as long as it did. Ultimately there are to many awful round types with zero RP like wizard which is a straight up combat mode. I'll probably come back eventually.. the nature of the game means that some rounds are amazing memorable experiences you will never forget and others are 4 hour long torture sessions of boredom. It really is an amazing game though and it is a shame people are to casual to push through and learn it. You really do see the cracks when you play over 1000 hours though.

Assistant is tutorial mode.
Once you figure out how to walk into places you don't belong, take things you have no use for, and put on an air mask without beating yourself to death with it play a new job.

Janitor or Cargo is usually the next step. Then off to a job you actually have to read the wiki to figure out how to do.

Try to make deals and get items to trade to the vox trader or other members of the crew. Try to smuggle weapons or contraband past sec, make fat stacks of cash and never rat on your associates. Beat down those who do rat.

Sec being ass holes? Black every hall way leading to sec with reinforced tables. Escape and evade the AI and sec with spray bottles and secret hideouts. If you get arrested you lose. Don't do this unless you are really experienced with combat mechanics and sec.

Be as helpful as possible, write kind heart felt notes. Aggressively white knight all female characters to the point of annoying sec. Get department heads coffee, get favors. Possibly obtain command ID'S and real authority through the power of friend ship.

Know space law back to front and annoy sec constantly of they don't follow the SOP or recommended sentence timer. Will probably get you brigged and give you plenty of RP reasons to sow treason and a possible armed uprising in the crew.

Pretend to be friends with known trouble makers, and when their guard is down disable them and take all their stuff. Lock their naked bodies in far away lockers. Never get caught, never admit anything. Work for the good of the station always but never let sec know. To them you should be another grey tide shitter. Because of your grey tide status you can gain trust where they could not.

You can think of more, don't just silently grey tide, involve others in your schemes as much as possible. The game isn't about winning it's about creating interesting situations and opportunities to be creative.

i played SS13 twice, the first round as an assistant just to learn the ropes, the second as a janitor. I got kicked midway through the second round for mopping floors. admittedly this was a pub server

Griff is not even a problem on the server I play on because we have extra antags added mid shift and no extended rounds so security always has something to do.

When you're role is law abiding doctor and you decide to start injecting people with poison "for teh lulz" yes. Yes it does.

Server rules flat out state you are playing the role of a law abiding citizen unless you get picked to be an antag.

The problem with loosening moderation is that the security force is never strong enough to deal with all the lawbreaking. In the early stages of the game, any lawbreaking can be an antag, or it can be just some guy fucking around. Security is quickly overwhelmed and then people start bitching.

If you are just fucking around and nobody is getting hurt and you aren't destroying the station, I don't care. If you are actively trying to hurt people or destroy the station, and you aren't an antag, you aren't playing in the spirit of the game and you deserve to be warned and banned.

If you think you shouldn't be warned or banned for being a fuckhead, don't scream to the admins when I beat you within an inch of your life with a stun baton.

Petty theft, fighting, trespass, vandalism, the minor crimes are all allowed for non-heads if RP'd well and for a reason on the server I play on.

Murder, stealing critical items like the disk, bombing the station, freeing the singulo nuking the station, exc are all perma-ban because it's shit RP and you have no IC reason to do it.

Everyone resists arrest because once security shows up and tries to arrest you, you can either resist arrest and continue being a fuckhead or be brigged and (most likely) wait out at least a good chunk of the rest of the round, which I agree isn't fun. Purely from the standpoint of having fun, there is no reason not to resist arrest and try to hurt or kill the police officer. In my opinion if someone resists arrest in this situation (and are not an antag) they are breaking role and powergaming.

Do a little of both. Don't blindly experiment but also don't just do nothing but reading. Use the wiki for inspiration or direction and bring that into the game. You can also just download the code, run a solo server with you as admin and really experiment with stuff.

Anyone, even security, can be destroyed by robust (or lucky) slipping - the bane of this game is that once you are on the ground you are completely defenceless and so can die extremely quickly.

I checked it out after seeing all the threads. Either I'm dumb, or it's a confusing mess of a game that requires either a week spent or a friend to play with. I don't have interest in the first option, and no one I know has ever played it.
