I have about 75 games on Steam, and have played many of them. Plus a few games on Origin, a couple of Blizzard games e.g. Starcraft 2, and a few older games that I have retail disc copies of (e.g. System Shock 2). As far as I can remember, the only game that I had trouble launching and running due to drivers was the Enhanced Edition of the first Witcher. A quick driver update resolved that problem. I had to install fan patches (and did so without difficulty) for System Shock 2 and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines to get them to run properly on Windows 7. Otherwise, for nearly every other game, I simply launched them and they ran just fine with default settings, which were usually set to "medium" or "high". The only reason I went into the settings is to see how much more I could squeeze out of the game while maintaining 60 FPS or close to it. I've made only one upgrade to my PC since I built it about 5 years ago, which is less expensive than a PS4 Pro.

There are threads on /v/ where people who play games on PC criticize a game for not having controller support. Something like this would be unthinkable 10 years ago. Think about that for a second.

I'm not a professional PC builder but every PC I've built at worst a bad psu is shipped to me and the most non obvious thing to do is hooking up the lights and power button on the case. Once Windows is installed running most things is not a problem. If there is any problems it's usually a really old game with no compatibility with my current OS and there usually is a work around

- Layers upon layers upon layers of DRM on top of a Spyware OS that thinks your computer should obey its overlord, not you.
- Internet connection required for many games / certain platforms
- Your hardware does not have a 10 year lifecycle. Companies want you to upgrade every 1-2 year.
- Very wide range of hardware configurations give devs excuse to be lazy and not properly optimize for your hardware - or not optimize for it at all. Also, see point above.
- Related to the first point, many companies that specializes on making PC games are reluctant to put a lot of production value on single player contents, preferring to focus on "providing multiplayer experiences" on servers that they control as a form of DRM.
- Once a company can get away with requiring users to rent servers for multiplayer, they will all require you to rent servers if you want to play multiplayer. When that happens, console's paid online will look cheap in comparison.
