Fire Emblem isn't the same genre as tactics games. Disgaea, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, etc are strategy RPGs, while Fire Emblem is more a strategy game with RPG elements. It's Advance Wars with heroes... Kind of like how Warcraft 3 is an RTS that added heroes and RPG elements

Nearly every Awakening map is line the one on the bottom. Shining Force, Tactics Ogre, and Final Fantasy Tactics games all look like the one on the top.

Some other games, like Front Mission, don't look like either because some of the basic assumptions (like attack range and accuracy/damage calculation) are considerably different. Front Mission might frequently have "open" areas, but the concerns involve roads for rapid travel and height or obstructions providing additional miss chances.

I have other SRPGs I prefer over Fire Emblem, although I still like the older Fire Emblem for their more strategy and less for the RPG system. Sure, the levels and randomized stat game can give playthroughs some variance, but it's the design of the older FE games (despite the flaws) which make them interesting.

It varies by game. Fates was a case of really shitting the bed in lore and worldbuilding while some of the older games did a fantastic job with it like Path of Radiance and even Genealogy of the Holy War to an extent.

I'd say the bigger problem with the "complexity" is that it ended up wrecking some important design balance, which made the game less strategic. Berserkers used to wreck Knights due to their high damage and high crit chance, but could barely deal with sword users due to their low accuracy. That didn't matter against Knights (since they were still fast enough to double, and got an accuracy buff vs. spears) but was devastating when a Myrmidon is hitting you. Now, Berserkers just have a bit more HP and maybe more strength than other units, and axes have just turned into a flavor rather than a high STR/high CRIT weapon. There isn't a strategic advantage of putting out a Berserker over a Myrmidon or any other unit outside the enemies being weak to the Axe element.

The combat of heroes is so watered down it's insulting to compare it to a mainline fire emblem game. FE maps often take into account things like what level your characters are, what classes you have access to, and what items you have to craft a challenge but all of that goes out the window when you can just buy 5*s and grind your way to victory.

I'm not saying there aren't FE games that don't also allow for that with Awakening/Fate's DLC and oldschool arena abusing but it wasn't actually encouraged the way it is in Heroes.

I loved the str/mag hybrid classes they introduced in awakening so you can build a wallbreaker, a unit with extra utility, or a straight up magic weapon user. Owain as a trickster, war cleric, or demon hunter(might have the class name wrong, from the awakening DLC) was fun as fuck.
