They're all good but the later you start the more convoluted the mechanics become and the easier it is to become overwhelmed with choice and scared off by how much work it seems like you have to do.

Disgaea 2 is the sweet spot for newcomers to the series. 1 is kind of a waste of time.

I tried Disgaea 3 and 4, the gameplay was fun but I totally hated the characters, story, music and general presentation.

I know it's getting a PS4 release on the same day, so there's that. I've been generally confused about the series though, even after reading on it (series has been around since '02, apparently). Seems to have Japan in the past aesthetic, and cat girls from what I can tell.

There's a demo on the PS4 right now if you want to try it, and NISA confirmed a Switch demo is coming soon (probably next week if I had to guess). The Disgaea series has generally been more zany and over the top in the SRPGs genre, so it makes for a nice breath of fresh air away from all the seriousness.

3 is generally considered to have the worst cast in the series and 4 is generally considered to have the best. I personally found 5's cast to be relatively inoffensive, though Killia is kind of dull as a protagonist. But he has one of the coolest reveals in the series so it balances out. 5 also has one of the few villains in the series that felt like a legitimate threat and didn't turn out to be a fraud in the end.

Gameplay wise 5 is hands down the best though.

It's literally just Gaiden's maps, they didn't even try.
I mean, anyone who had been following the FE series know that the main complain that people had about Gaiden, and the reason the remake was welcomed at first, was how SHIT the maps were.

I've tried emulating Gaiden, and holy shit. The series has made so much progress since the NES days, that the UI feels beyond clunky. Despite that, the gameplay was pretty interesting, especially for an FE game. Compared to Echoes though, the original almost seems unplayable.
