You can't take a regular word with it's regular pronounciation and then replace some letters and say well they're pronounced differently but I use them to describe what the sound should sound like or whatever.

There is no world where "AHctopus" or "hAHckey" make any sense whatsoever. Cause, like, it's a fucking o. The letter O. OH. or whatever you would put that. OOOEh. And it's pronounced so shortly that it makes no sense in any way whatsoever to write it as anything that has anything to do with "AH".

Like I *get* how you fucking say AHctopus. It's just retarded, that's all. Normal people don't say it like that. Try fucking saying cktopus that would be closer to what the civilized world calls it. The issue is not that anyone in this thread can't differentiate between long and short vowels, it's the some people are too goddamn daft to comprehend how these sounds might be written phonetically. Short O and "Ah" are the same thing. If they don't sound the same to you, it's not because anyone else doesn't know how to pronounce a short O; it's because you're pronouncing "Ah" stupidly and then refusing to heed any of the very clear explanations that have been offered to you.

Conversely, oak uses [oʊ] which is a diphthong and nobody is even talking about it.

Gee, how convenient that this features the pronunciation clip only for the "American" pronunciation, but not for the "British" one, thereby showing only that the word is phoneticized differently in the two countries but not actually proving that it's pronounced any differently.

America isn't so fucking isolated that we've never heard a British person speak before, unlike the reverse apparently. "Pot" is pronounced exactly the same in both countries.

I don't see anyone having trouble understanding written out notation, what I'm seeing is someone claiming "ocarina" uses the "ah" sound (you?) and people disagreeing with it. Neither of you is wrong, you're just talking about different sounds.

When people talk about short o in this thread they're talking about [ɒ], not "ah". You claiming they're the same is the problem here, as they're not misunderstanding what "ah" means, you're misunderstanding what "short o" in this context is.
>>
>>376909238

Jesus christ you're really just stupendously dumb. The confusion about what the "Ah" sound actually IS - in other words, the confusion about WRITTEN-OUT NOTATION - is what spurred this entire stupid discussion. Your entire argument so far has consisted of telling other people what they mean while they continually correct you.

>When people talk about short o in this thread they're talking about [ɒ], not "ah". You claiming they're the same is the problem here, as they're not misunderstanding what "ah" means, you're misunderstanding what "short o" in this context is.
The problem is both sides not AGREEING on what "Ah" means, it has never had anything to do with anyone claiming that it's pronounced the same as another sound and being wrong. It's like this:

>Anon 1 says "Ocarina" is pronounced with an "Ah" sound
>Anon 2 misunderstands how Anon 1 pronounces "Ah" and tells him he's wrong
>Anon 1 uses another word as an example of how he's pronouncing "Ah" for clarification

Expecting on 4chan to use IPA is an unreasonable expectation. Yes, had it been used from the very beginning of this thread, confusion could have been avoided - this is true. The issue is not that I'm refusing to use it; it's that the point at which it would have been helpful has long since passed and everything has been clearly explained in other ways by now. However, the clingy anon isn't just saying "Hey guys this could've been avoided if you'd just used IPA," he's saying "You're pronouncing these words wrong because I said so, and also IPA writes them differently from how you did." If he were to stop arguing that people are pronouncing words verbally in a way other than how they're actually pronouncing them, we'd be done here.
>>
>>376909696
No...You maybe referring to similar instruments to ocarina like xun, but...like in most Japanese works, from anime to manga, they tend to take a motif from the europeans and try to mistify it.

The modern day ocarina is italian in origin and name. Types similar ocarinas are more than 10 000 of years old and show up in a lot of old cultures, from South America to China.

They were asking more examples of "ah" because they didn't think it described how octopus or ocarina is pronounced. When that was clarified, they merely disagreed that they should pronounced with "ah", and said it should use short o instead - that clearly implies that "ah" and short o should be treated as two different sounds, hence why you equating them is wrong.

In British English, a short 'o' and 'ah' are completely different sounds, and saying 'ahcarina' just makes us sound American.
