How exactly are they hard to find?

You get one in the abandoned workshop, nothing really hidden, you either go up to the orphanage, or drop down until you see a door, so far so good. You get one from Iosefka's clinic when you get back there from the path in forbidden woods near the dog cages, nothing really hidden about this either. You get the third one from Willem, and it's not like he's hidden or something, he's right before Rom.

What cannot be done without a guide are NPC questlines (especially in souls games), and how to access the DLCs. And I agree this is bullshit, but in this case, it's just exploring the world.

You're right about everything, except bosses and level design.

DaS3 obliterates EVERYTHING in terms of level design, nothing comes close to undead settlement, lothric's castle, cathedral of the deep or archdragon peak. Even masterpieces like Ariamis, Undead Burg, early Yharnam, nightmare frontier or old hunters feel like pre alpha early access stuff compared to the best of DaS3.

And bosses, yes BB does have some great bosses, but DaS3 is a step above. And it kinda makes sense, some things get better over time.

As soon as you beat a main boss and touch a skull you're given the key to the DLC as soon as you go back to the hub.
Once you have that, it's easy to know what to do with it once you do another part of the main progression which is get grabbed by a big alien thing that's in one of the starting areas and you've already been in contact with most likely.

Untrue on all accounts for level design it least. Every level you make mention of, I found to be rather by-the-books with Settlement being rather boring. This isn't a bad thing, BB and DaS3 have pretty much the same level design in terms of quality (good overall with some dips, but not equal to the shit quality tanking found in DeS/DaS1/DaS2), but BB's I found to be much more vivid and atmospheric whereas DaS3's levels felt quite drab. Also, I said "arguably", not the best, because people have made a case for DaS3.

Same with bosses, but nothing matched some of the FRC bosses from BB, notably Descendant and a couple others.

Meh, let's say different opinions. I bought a PSquadruple 2 days ago, just so I can play BB after not playing it since Old hunters. I finished everything this morning, just have Gehrman left.

And while level design feels amazing, so intuitive and coherent, the shortcuts and hidden spots can't quite compare with DaS3. The big plus is that you can see every area from every other area, making the world feel real, something DaS3 doesn't really have, but that's world design.

I was blown away by Yharnam and Yahar'gul, but byrgenwerth, forbidden woods and mergo's loft are kinda meh. Not bad by any means, but just ok, they get the job done. Hemwick was a visual masterpiece and clearly inspired undead settlement, but it's pretty straight forward. Same goes for Cainhurst castle, it's painfully obvious that they have bigger plans for it.
