The developers are not talented. All they makes besides animal crossing are shovelware like Wii fit and Wii play. This means that one can not expect the series to ever progress in a real way. Additionally, the original game had its dialogue completely rewritten by the old American team that no longer exists. Now we only get shitty translations instead of town people that have distinct human-like speech. Instead of huge blocks of text, everything is short and humor = memes

It's entirely a "make your own goals" kind of game.
There's just a lot of "befriend NPCs that say the same thing all the time" as the "main" goal alongside paying bills to upgrade your house, but most people set goals alongside it to get time out of the game, be it making their town just the way they like it, or theming their house, or collecting the entire catalog.
There's not really anything substantial to the game itself, as much as it just kind of gives you a blank slate to do whatever with.

You know what would make AC fun? Mods.
