I just started learning Unity/C# a few days ago and I have to work today, so actual work on my game is still a ways away.

>mfw I finally have some free time and I've actually been waiting for this thread to pop up

I want to make my first game, where is a guy supposed to begin, specifically someone who wants to try out every facet? Is a 2-D platformer in unity a feasible option for a first project?

I used to study software engineering about 4 years ago which is when I used C# (got my paper and basically skipped over to another study and never really used it again) so I'm a bit rusty on that but I'm not completely foreign to programming,
>>
>>376807490
I'll be honest. I kind of hate you right now. I've been working alone on organizing everything needed for the same 3d platfomer, somewhat day of the dead aspect. It's not a 1 for 1 of what I thought but whatever.
Looks cool though.

>>
>>376807725
Nothing at the moment. I'm kidding about the hate part, it's just that it seems every time I'm working on a project, something comes up that seems similar enough to warrant accusations of rip-off.
That being said, I honestly like what you're going for with it. I'll keep working on my own thing, we'll see where that leads.
Does it have a name or is it still early in production?

Not big into sound design so feel free to call me out if i'm completely wrong, but the mixing in general for all the instruments seems kind of... even? Like most of them are trying to fight for dominance in the song.

As far as specific feedback goes, I think you should tone the volume on the tuba down a bit. It makes the song a little grating to listen to.

Also to add, if learning to code seems frightening you might want to look into Playmaker asset in the unity asset store. With it you can do quite alot in Unity without ever touching code and even if you start learning to code, Playmaker can save time with some things.

So here's what I think you should do is
>Check out some Unity beginner videos explaining the engine and the software to get the hang of how Unity works
>Try doing some beginner tutorials.
>Don't worry or spend too much time trying to memorize different lines of code, just focus on understanding why something does something, not why a part of a command is written in a way it is
>Keep doing tutorials even if you don't understand what the fuck is going on. As long as your project works you will eventually start automatically pick things up
>See what is in the asset store, try some free shit and consider trying Playmaker or other purchasable assets
>Start doing your own shit using things you've done before in your earlier projects

Good typical starter project could be a rolling ball (WASD) with collectables and possibility of death e.g. touching another object (collider).

I had 'games development' as my minor.

First thing we did was fuck around in gamemaker as a fun introduction. It wasn't anything particularly insightful but I'd never used it before and made my first game.
There was also a class where we had to write a design document and pitch an idea, it was fun but useless.

It all went to shit after that since the cool, passionate head of the course had a stroke and left it all in the hands of the Computing head who had no fucking clue what to do with it.

We were given one Java class and a class on 'serious games' where we were put into groups and things went nowhere. We did one flash class where we designed a digital brochure for booking a vacation.
In my last year I was put into 'Virtual Environments', and after listening to the lecturer rambling about Second Life and digital boardroom meetings for one afternoon in broken english I immediately requested to be stuck in my buddy's programming class instead.

All I can say is thank fuck it wasn't my major.

The godot documentation was actually really good for helping me comprehend what I was doing as well as just executing it. The thing with most video tutorials (even the official unity ones) is that they just tell you what to do but don't really tell you the logic of what you're doing and why.

Also brush up on basic programming shit first if you're coming from nothing. You shouldn't need a huge amount to start but just knowing basic shit will take you a long way. Never read over a word, if you don't understand it: google it and try to.

Try playing around with the cymbals. They sound okay now, but you might be able to get some more impact out of them if you space them out or only play them at certain parts of the second half.

Exactly. Doing 2D in 3D is not that hard, but you have to play around with angles, lighting and fixing some minor details for different angles.

Made a lot of progress this week, mainly because my cutscene system is now almost complete.
I need to make a choice system (i.e. they ask mario if he's ready and he can say no to stop the cutscene), but besides that I can now transform, animate, talk, spawn, destroy, and delay cutscenes in a sequence.

And in more minor, but still decent progress, my textbox system now properly animates the characters talking.

Yeah. I know that. Those stats are just placeholders for now. This model is suposed to be in the range od 12-14.

>>376843906
I don't blame you for thinking that. The problem is that I really, really suck at drawing. So I had to resort to modeling things in 3D and then using prerendered images in fucking 2D game. So the "art" in this game is not that great. The good thing is that it is much better than my first thing and I hope it keeps getting better.

This game is suposed to be a mix of princess maker and harvest moon. I also took a lot of inspiration from games like runescape and gothic.
Basicaly, you will go around, explore the world, raise your stats by working for other people, get rich and popular and do the general RPG stuff.
The big thing will be the time management. Most actions like working or training will take 7 days of your time. Your character will visibly get older too. Game will end after like 8 ingame years and then you will get a ending depending on things you did and on your stats.

>>376846171
This is the main reason why I'm doing that. It always baffles me how in other games you can become god in like three ingame days. This way it will be much more believeable. The MC will change both physicaly and psychycaly. I want to add things like visible muscle definition if you get your STR high enough or things like changin skin tone depending on the work you do. I have things like scars and wounds already in.
The way NPCs react to you will also change depending on your age.

Low IQ isn't important in most things in life because everything can be broken down into the smallest of steps of which even a retard can eventually learn.

>I tried learning by following unity tutorials, asking a friend for help and youtube guides.
You make what was in the tutorial and then change what you made to fit your project. Yeah, it's hard at first but it gets easier as you go on and as you work with the code you'll pick up on what you're supposed to be doing. Be prepared to spend weeks on a stupid problem when somebody who knows what they're doing could do in an hour.

Designing a 3d platformer, and I'm working on boss designs. When you think of bosses for 2d platformers, you generally think of DK or Mario where you just dodge attacks and wait for a chance to jump on the enemy's heads. While 3d platformers are like that, your method of attack or dodging the enemies' attacks may vary. Regardless, can most all platformer bosses be boiled down to "dodge attacks and wait for opening"? I basically want to design something that's more interesting than just dodging.

Congrats anon, thats really good! Now you know how to play an animation when it hits an object with a certain tag and next time you won't even need to watch a youtube video when you need to do it again. You are new and should absolutely not be trying to reinvent the wheel, but you should be looking at the code to see where you can change it if you need to.

Personally, I consider my gamedev to be a hobby so I don't have any pressure to succeed, but I find it fun so i've been making steady progress and it's only been getting faster because I'm starting to know what I'm doing. Just give it time and it'll grow on you.

I got used to that. But I am working on this game for like almost two years and it will take a lot of shit to stop me now. Another good thing is the fact that I want to release this thing for free. The only reason I am working on it is because i REALLY want to. So im no rush and there is no preasure.

And thanks for the video. I watched it and it had some nice things that will definitely come in handy. I played around with ingame graphics like a year ago and I should be able to do my "3D to 2D" thing just fine. Will need a lot of work ofcourse but I will never realease this thing with default graphics.

Can't make my own art. Due to the license of the engine I'm working on at the moment, I can't release with the assets I have now without doing some bullshit that will guarantee that no one will play my game. Plus, the assets I'm using now are shit compared to what I'm looking for.

Maybe for Sonic, but not for Metroid. The corresponding stage theme sounds like this: https://clyp.it/dmlmwzcd

Metroid is a series where a significant chunk of the boss tracks have light percussion or no percussion at all, so the difference between boss music and stage music tends to come out a lot more with contrast. I could probably vary up some of the dynamics, though.

>i'm also not a metroid fan, so you've got me there.
The series is a bit of a mixed bag for me, really. I'm purposely ignoring a lot of trends in the design of those games, the main reason I have for making a game in the style of Metroid is because I have a gimmick that ties into Samus' character design that I really like and I can't draw to save my life and would like to be able to practice iterating on game and level design while I'm busy learning the skills for art

>>376863121
It's somewhat of a remix of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUWtSrG6xKU
I didn't write this track with Aquatic Ambiance in mind, but, in retrospect, it definitely sounds similar - it probably doesn't help that I'm using Chrono Trigger's soundfont for a lot of the instruments. I'm glad you like it!

Today I fixed a sorting function, it used to take 2500 milliseconds to sort a vector of 1000 objects, now takes 0

Turns out sorting huuuge objects takes a lot longer than sorting simple ints. So what I did was create a vector of pair<int, int> based on the objects and sorted that.

pair.first = the object's ID value, pair.second = the object's value that I'm using to sort

After sorting, I recreated the vector of objects, based on the vector of pairs

Y'know what's kinda fascinating?

I've been looking up as much detail as I can find about it, even emailed the guy who made that Mario 64 HD demo.
The big names don't seem to have gotten real C&D letters.
So far it seems at least Mario 64 HD and AM2R never got formal Cease & Desist demands.

>Mario 64 HD guy got back to me and said only his download links and video got DMCA notices and he stopped doing shit after that
>AM2R's blog only said their links got DMCA'd, and the guy still posts on twitter and goes around saying he's the maker of AM2R, not really showing any signs of being sued or anything like rumors state.

I'm starting to think maybe Nintendo isn't as ruthless about fangames as people say they are.
They seem to just target the download links, the developers back off after that, and nothing more happens.
Can't find anything about full lawsuits on game developers, and the C&D letters aren't guaranteed either.
>>
>>376799002
all my progress has been me trying to make the game run faster (hideously limited platform here) even though I've barely accomplished anything
certainly is a lot more fun than working on it proper though

>things I've learned: write all your important loops like this:
ii=count; while(ii) { ii--; stuff(ii); } //goes backwards, faster because branch if not zero
>instead of the normal:
for (ii=0; ii!=count; ii++) { stuff(ii); } //goes forwards, needs more instructions when comparing
the compiler doesn't do the first one automatically because the loop index is used directly and it doesn't know that order doesn't matter

at least, do it if you're on some god awful single-digit MHz 8-bit machine using sdcc and you need every last bit of speed and you're dumb enough to be using C like me, and there's probably an even faster way
also, unroll critical bits manually anyway

Pretty much pick up Unity, pick up a C# tutorial series, and start working on it. You'll learn along the way.

You'll have to drop your grandiose game idea hard though. Put all thought of it out of your mind, because you aren't ready for it.

I'd say come back to it when you have at least 10 smaller games under your belt (not including tutorial/learning projects)

If you go into gamedev trying to make your dream game you WILL burn out and drop it. I've seen it happen so many times. Start tiny.
