Billy Hatcher was a solid platformer, that too real skill to beat. It challenged your timing, your precision, and your control over the sticks.
The challenges were built around a unique mechanic. The music was charming, the character designs were charming. But it lacked something that Banjo Kazooie had... And that was real character.

Billy, for all his expressiveness, didn't feel like a character you could connect to. He was more like an avatar of pure excitement and joy for the player to assume. But beyond that, he didn't come across as a thinking independent entity for the player to relate to. And neither did the supporting cast. Because of this, Billy never had the "mascot" appeal required to become the memorable classic.

Couple that with the fact that the game actually required skill, unlike Banjo Kazooie, not many people tolerated the game beyond the first few levels. Billy Hatcher ended up being that one game you rent and forget. Or if you happened to own it, it collects dust on your shelf, if you haven't already loaned it out to your friend indefinitely.

It's a good solid game, that really could have been something, but instead repelled the casuals with low character appeal, and demanding challenge. RIP.

I played it cause a few communities said it was a great 3D platformer and hailed it as a masterpiece, I played it and experienced one of the most buggy PC ports I've ever played in my life with a subpar, linear, and mostly generic 3D platformer underneath. The artstyle was also trash and reeked of quirky invader zim-tier hipster kid pandering, which makes it not suprising that Tim Schaffer later ended up becoming an SJW just like those same exact hipster kids who grew up on this game. There are many things I can say about that game but underrated is definitely not one. It also makes me mad that such a cool concept was wasted on such a shitty game. That being said, costume quest looks like a cute game and probably the only thing I'll ever play from doublefine after the shitshow that was Psychonauts.

Sorry but I stand by my statement that psychonauts is fucking awful. One of the few games I wish I could refund, but bought it before refunding games on steam was a feature. It's a buggy piece of shit and the cutscenes don't even work properly half the time.
