It was the release of the Xbone S that caused it, but I'm sure the upcoming Gears of War 4 release helped it out. Also, the Kinect has been removed for years at this point.

That's not really a surprise, it's too early for anything Halo related, aside from maybe a "Halo 3: Anniversary", but I doubt that'll happen.

I'm not part of the "360 was a failure" crowd. It just wasn't the most sold console of last generation. Nor was it the second most.
But I also know that at least 10% of it's sales were attributed to people buy brand new 360's to replace RRoDed consoles. The Tech support for the console may have been generous but they really never actually fixed the problem. they always refurbished the consoles so that they would work for a bit longer so you would have to pay them again to "fix" it.

By the end of PS3's life cycle the console has barely outsold the 360. Not to say it made a better profit but it did sell more units than the 360.
