>24fps on a 1080 with an i7 in Witcher 2

What the fuck is wrong with my PC? I just upgraded to an i7 6700k, a 1080 and 32 gigs or RAM on Windows 7 and some games are still running like fucking shit. At first I thought I might have a bottleneck since my GPU seemed to be performing fine, but anything CPU heavy was literally shitting the bed, I average about 20fps in Men of War as well. But then I realize my CPU isn't even using itself to max capacity, it's barely using half of it's power here. Why the fuck is my i7 not working properly? Or is Witcher 2 just an extremely badly optimized game? Note that I can play Metro 2033 at like 155 frame per second.

Will post more pics.

It's off, turning it off gives me maybe 10-15 extra in Witcher 2.

With ubersampling on, it averages around 20-30. With it off it averages around 40-50 fps but with drops to 30 and lower like in pick related every now and then.

>Even my old i5 + GTX 550ti could run TW2 at 1080p, Medi-High settings at steady 50+ framerates.

I can barely get 60 on absolute minumum graphics in Withcer 2. I put everything to low and I can barely gain 30 frames. Yet my old set up, an i5 2500k and a 660 ti could play it at around 40fps maxed out aside from ubersampling, which would put it around 15 fps. Why is my new rig barely better than my old one for Witcher 2?
>>
did you run those games in Administrator mode?
what are your nvidia settings towards those two games?
>>
>>376762284
your rig is miles better. Something's just off software-wise, either on the game's or on the driver's side.

Try to completely disable the Intel HD Graphics from your Hardware management settings.
>>
>>376761231
Yeah something's up with that. I only just finished a Witcher 3 playthrough with a 1080 and i5 4590 playing at 4k60fps constantly. Turn off ubersampling and the blur options for both gameplay and cutscenes. W2 had some pretty fucked up blur and DoF settings that stacked on top of each other that really fucks up performance.

Men of War isn't on PS4 anon. MoW: Assault Squad 2 mods and Call to Arms was my main reason to upgrade, but I also wanted to play some other graphically intensive games my old i5 and 660 couldn't run, and am just pissed off that after waiting 5 years to upgrade Witcher 2 still runs like fucking ass.

AS2 runs better when I have lowered the AI count, this is a 16 player AI match. When I play campaign it plays at 60fps with drops to 40 when the action is heavy. I excepted some big frame drops on this with mods and so many AI units, but it's still giving me the shits with how big it is, I expected at least 30fps at least, and my CPU is just sitting around not even playing at full capacity.
>>
May performance was equally strange on a 970. It played fine for a while, but one day I loaded it up and the framerate was all over. Playing windowed was the only solution I found. Luckily it was on my second playthrough trying the terrible Roche route, so it wasn't much of a loss.
>>
>>376762396
>Try to completely disable the Intel HD Graphics from your Hardware management settings.

How do I do that?

Also I decided to test out Cryostasis since it was notorious for being unoptimized, I actually almost got to 60fps though it regularly dropped to 30. I'd say it was an average of 40-50fps in Cryostasis.
>>
>>376761231
Disable V-Sync and ambient occlusion, and make sure that rendering distance is below medium
You can also go into the User.ini files and set AllowSharpen to 0

If that doesn't help then you're on your own
>>
Sounds to me like something isn't properly installed in your PC.
Even in Metro you're getting pretty sub-par performance (unless that's absolute max settings including SSAA).

Sorry I meant under 100.

Anyways I also have a massive ram problem with Men of War. As you can see it's got about 10 gigs loaded into ram. I have 32 gigs installed, but every time it goes over 10 gigs in the cache, the game crashs. This game crashed about a minute after I took this screenshot. How the hell do I allow the games (and firefox) to use all my 32 gigs instead of being limited.
>>
>>376761231
Check your power management mode in Windows settings. I had the exact same problem- mine was set to "balanced" to try and conserve power. Windows was literally throttling my GPU and CPU since I bought them.
>>
>>376761231
Make sure you have an HDMI 2.0 I think.
Make sure VSYNC in your nvidia options is off, and that your screen resolution is set to 60hz not 30hz.
>>
>>376762694
One thing I can suggest you try to check is the power cable to your GPU. A few months back, when I was installing my new SSD and had to take my 1080 out, my power cables weren't completely in when I reinstalled it. This caused the 1080 to run in constant low power mode and I was getting bad performance and constant frame pacing issues in almost everything I played. This continued for like a week until I decided to see what's wrong and noticed the power cable being a bit loose. Tightened that shit in and have been getting max performance in everything.

No you bloody moron.
For the last time: you DO NOT want your CPU nor GPU to be at 100% usage! That would mean that they are literally pushing their limits to give you a playable experience.

If your game keeps %%% below 100, that is a GOOD thing, because it means that the game's a peace of cake for your components to run, and there is no bottleneck.

riiiight....
Let's not forget the dozens of game-breaking bugs, crashes and auto-deleting saves we've had to deal with ever since 7th gen. Online connectivity and "patch it later" mentality has ruined console games.
>>
>>376763502
On consoles, you can't even play older games on newer hardware unless the devs give you the option to buy the game again. I know you'd like to believe every single new game just breaks the fuck down on PC based on users complaining, but the fact is that even in a broken state, they work on par or better than the console counterpart.

Your hardware specs are more than fine. Something's not right, drivers? Ubersampling? AA? I'm not sure what, but something from a software standpoint is messing you up. There's no way that a 1080 would pull such low fps in that game.

>>
>>376763704
This is aboslutely true, I'm still the guy you replied to but I absolutely believe we were in a better time when consoles couldn't be connected to the internet and games either had a rerelease ala games like MGS3 or Persona 3 with updated everything and extra content, or that games were actually playtested and bugtested to be a complete experience before releasing. nowadays devs rely on the fact that everybody and consoles have internet to release broken as fuck games that they day 1 patch and other bullshit to make at least technically stable.

>>376764294

Here. I have tried lowering a bunch of things and on lowest settings it does go above 60fps easy, but on a gtx 1080 with an i7 I shouldn't have to play on lowest fucking settings. It's bullshit.

Wait a minute, you're getting sub-60fps at 1080p? On a gtx 1080?
>>
>>376764576

I put too much thermal paste on my CPU and when I put the fan on, it almost went over the side, so I scraped some of it off with a card, so it's a thin layer but cover the whole thing. The temperatures seem fine though.

Also got a 700 watt PSU.

The only thing that stands out to me is to try lowering MSAA and that should help some, but your setup really shouldn't be having trouble with this even. Clean install of drivers and to make absolutely sure your pc is using your GPU and not integrated graphics. Also sometimes the most simple solution is the easiest: is your monitor plugged into your GPU?
>>
>>376765334

I just got done installing Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit SP1 the other day on my SSD via USB then activating it and it was enough of a fucking hassle. my entire PC is brand fucking new except for my backup drives from my old PC.

>>
>>376765359

The problem really is most likely with the GPU or some of your non-ingame settings. If you had an issue with your mobo you would likely be noticing issues elsewhere. Check temps during gameplay as well.

Aside from Witcher 2, what about my problems with Men of War? I know the framerate is shit because 16 AI's in my game and I am just disappointed we haven't advanced enough, but I am having a real ram problem. Read the thread. In both Witcher 2 and Black Flag, the difference between max settings and minimum is about 30 frames. Somethings up with my system. I would, but Men of War was my reason for upgrading. I put Witcher on my backlog years ago, and thought I'd test it out and it not running was what clued me into something being very wrong. But Men of War is my most played gaming series and I upgraded specifically for AS2 and Call to Arms, and while CtA runs fairly well it dips to 40fps sometimes but it's early access and unoptimized as fuck so I will give it a pass, but MoW's ram issue is giving me the shits since I just want to load shit tons of mods into it and have fuckhuge battle with 10k soldiers on screen where each one is an induvidual textured unit and not a clone, because MoW mods really do go that far.

Drivers do indeed have improvements for games as they come out. Check nvidia's update notes. It is still strange though because whatever drivers you're using should be up-to-date enough to have shit for those games already in them.

Because Kabylake doesn't work with Windows 7

Those screenshots where just particularly bad drops though, it was mostly running around 20-30 fps in that match. The problem is I can't put too much team variation or the ram fills up and it crashes. I have to have 4 USA's and 4 UK's fight 4 Germany's and 4 Japans. Instead of having 1 USA, Germany, UK, USSR, Japan, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Poland, France etc units and factions in the match too. The game tries to load an entire factions worth of units into the ram and crashes the game on loading. I can get about 5 factions with the GSM mod but often it will crash mod match, I have to go down to 4 faction to be safe. With other mods that have less units types per faction I can diversify more and fill out all 16 slots with a different faction but GSM mod is just insane for how many units there are, how fucking good it is and how badly it kills my ram.

>>
>>376772181
Sometimes parts have issues, sometimes there is something wrong with settings, sometimes the user is just an idiot. We have no idea what is going on with this one, it happens. The parts you posted will destroy anything you throw at them. There is really no need to be concerned. And if they don't work, which is an extremely low chance by the way, you get them replaced for free.
>>
>>376772429
>And if they don't work, which is an extremely low chance by the way, you get them replaced for free.

OP here, do you think I should just do this? How do I go about doing this? I am feeling ripped off at the moment. As I said I just clean installed everything on a brand new SSD as well so it's not retarded settings or me doing stupid shit.

The only thing I could think off on my end is that I am still running Windows 7.

it will be fine

i can still max pretty much everything at 1080p using a 2500k and 980 from years ago
>>
>>376772731
Not until you've tried everything I would say. At this point I might give /g/ a shot. If you absolutely cannot get any improvement after spending some more time researching I would consider replacing the GPU. Couldn't hurt. Still though, my guess is you have some setting somewhere fucking something up, not a hardware issue. Like you said you get appropriate performance in other games which wouldn't be happening if it was a hardware issue.
>>
>>376772903

>>376772903
>well im most likely one of those idiots
well i suppose we all were at one point. only way to learn is to keep building. protip: tell your friends you'll build them a pc and have them pay for your learning experiences. when they get mad that shit doesn't work just tell them this kind of thing happens when you build your own pc. once you're around 5 builds it gets a lot easier but if you run into any problems they tend to get a lot harder to solve. also parts are extremely rarely doa, aside from what newegg comments would lead you to believe, so don't use that as a bullshit excuse and force yourself to learn.

>match the, whatever, half moons on the cpu to the socket

there's literally almost nothing you can do to fuck up unless you somehow manage to jam the cpu in the wrong way which is basically impossible. it's generally the little things like too much strain on cables that causes them to seat improperly that causes problems.
>>
>>376773306
This is honestly the best advice. I modded my first system 6 years ago, then built one from scratch, built one for my parents and earlier this year convinced my friends to buy parts so I could build it and see how newer parts/windows 10 are to setup. As you get better at learning hardware you also get better at learning how to identify and isolate problems.
>>
Attention lads, I think I found the problem with Witcher 2.

>>376764184

I just tried this and weirdly this gives me so much more frames. I can't believe this was the fucking thing. I was loading an autosave from 2015. I deleted all my saves and started a new game, instant 150fps in the prologue area. When I got up the the encampment area that my screenshot was from it still went down low, but not 30's low, it was basically around 50fps with spikes to 60 occasionally. Maybe that is just a really intensive area.

Still doesn't explain Ass Creed though, maybe it's just unoptimized garbage.

seriously m8. look into freenas. i have 6 3tb drives in zfs2 so i even have a little room for hardware failure and 12tb of usable space. the rig did cost me about 1200 though only because i got some 8 core monster to handle plex transcoding and a virtual machine to run a ventrilo server.
>>
>>376775364

I checked and some mobo's do have that many ports but they were so expensive I didn't bother with one. 6 are internal and the other 3 are external with USB 3.0.

I also forgot to mention, but A World at War, Valour and Galaxy at War are also great mods.

I think the ram issue is just with mods, I disabled all my mods and here you can see the base game is running at 113 fps and les ram is being used.

I think the mods just try to load way to many assets into ram and end up crashing the game, so I was wondering if there was a way to extend the memory limits so it can take advantage of my new 32 gigs. Before I just had 8 gigs, so I expected crashes with that.

>>
>>376779438
Intel doesn't have anything like this.

All you can do is go to Power Options in Windows settings and select High Performance, this won't let the processor lower it's clocks or go idle. Cores will still park because intel hides core parking control from the user but tools like "Manage Parked CPU Utility" or process lasso can force them to stay unparked.

Don't forget to set "Prefer maximum performance" in Nvdia control panel as well.
