The only reason I'm still sitting on 2600k is because I'm waiting for Volta and will build a new PC when it comes out.

Jesus christ, make it stop.

Kinda unrelated I guess but you guys think it's worth to upgrade from a 750Ti to a 1050Ti ? the 1060 is too expensive for me since I'm a poorfag atm.
>>
>>376740679
>12 CORES
So we finally really are cockblocked by the limits of transistors miniaturization?
I kinda doubt they have made a breakthrough in multithreading even if they have a better architecture.
>>
>>376740679
The TDPs are ridiculous. They're having to really crank these things out of the box to compete with Ryzen, since the HEDT flagship there will be sixteen cores and blow the fuck out of this twelve core in the kind of workloads it's designed for.

It's almost like competition is a good thing or something.
>>
last I remember almost no games make real use of multiple cores, maybe 2 at most.

Please enlighten me which games actually use 4 or more CPU cores.

You'll be waiting quite a bit, around a year. GV100 doesn't even have functional engineering samples out yet, let alone GV104. TSMC "12nm"

That said GV104 will have 3584 shaders and GV106 1792 shaders. Performance for GV104 should be around GP102. Power use won't go down too much, TSMC 12nm is just a refined version of their 16nm process. Same 20nm BEOL. No clue what the plans they've got past Volta are though.

btw Vega 10 is intended to go up against GV104 apparently. The only GPU products AMD has for 2018 will be Vega 20, a die shrink + FP64 for the compute market. It'll be late 2018 on GloFlo 7nm, quad pattern DUV will make it too costly for consumers despite better electrostatic characteristics. Navi and Zen 3 are both 2019 once EUV machines roll out for the 7nm process which will lower costs.
>>
>>376742101
I'm not in a rush, I've got a massive backlog of DS, 3DS, PS3 and old PC games to go in the meantime.
In fact, I'm rather happy about it because ever since my GPU died, I actually started playing through my backlog and couldn't be happier.
Sometimes tragedy brings happiness.
>>
>>376742221
>>376742101
Also, that's rather disappointing but not unexpected for AMD.

Literally any "AAA" gayme released in the past few years. Most won't even run on CPUs with less than four threads any more. Dragon Age: Cisquisition and Far Cry 4 back in 2014 were the first games to refuse to even boot on CPUs with less than four threads available, which shit on all the people fooled by the G3258 overclocking meme.
>>
>>376742331
It's not surprising, GPU's take 4 years to go from idea to product. Look back 3-4 years ago at the financial state AMD was in. They bet the farm on Zen, paid off too. Server market will be one to watch. Pinnacle Ridge as well if the SOI rumors are true.

Navi will be pretty fucking brutal for Nvidia though, it is not going to be a "refined" and "elegant" approach. Crossfire will be dead at least.

Well unless Nvidia has the same plan, but I doubt it. They've been real tight on whats past Volta, but AMD has more experience on the specific tech.
>>
>>376742487
multi-core will become a big deal soon from what I know.

intel/amd are having a really hard time increasing the frequency so making it more parallel is all thats left.

expect 100 core processors in a few years.
>>
>>376742806
We already have 100 core processors, they just call them GPUs
>>
>>376742923
which are lower frequency and are specialized for graphical operations.

general gpu programming is a big deal, but why bother when you can just make 100 core processors and remove the extra overhead.
>>
>>376741957
what year do you think this is?
>>
Just a little question guys.
How many burgers do I need to stop being a hardware retard? Because in my country I'd probably need near to double that amount.
>>
>>376742720
>It's not surprising
Like I said, "not unexpected".
I'm more curious about Intel though, they keep talking about wanting to tap into that GPU market but all they keep making is essentially tablet-tier.
>>
>>376741707
>1050ti
>1060
>when AMD parts outperform them for the same price
>>
>>376742994
That was the idea with Cell, and look how that went
>>
>>376743662
Cell was quite powerful, substantially so.
The main and only real problem with it was that the architecture was retardedly hard to code for.
>>
>>376743662
cell came too early when there was still advancements to be made in linear processing.

cell was also very successful and used by multiple universities and government research centers.

in todays environment, a modern cell would dominate the market as programs become more and more parallel.
>>
>>376742487
thanks for enlightening me, I must've been living under a rock on the dark side of the moon
>>
>>376743728
it really wasn't, especially after it yielded terribly and couldn't clock at the full advertised frequency.
>>
>>376743848
PS3 clusters only happened because a PS3 was dirt cheap compared to a comparable server chip. Cell was outperformed by POWER chips of the same era.
>>
>>376744167
>processor is cost effective
>lol it sucks because this other more expensive processor is better than it barely
good try retard
>>
>>376743662
>>376743728
CELL was fine.
But it was also bottlenecked by a lot of bad hardware decisions.

It really doesn't matter if CELL is powerful or not, when the main workhorse will be the GPU, and everything surrounding the GPU is crippled.
>>
>>376744356
They sold the Cell outside of the PS3 as well, and it wasn't cheap. It was just the PS3, Sony sold them at a sizeable loss and that was just including production cost not what the MSRP of all components would be.
>>
>>376744506
>cell is dirt cheap
>wait no its actually not dirt cheap
make up your mind retard.
>>
>>376744409
I'm talking HPC faggotry not muh gayms.
>>
>>376744632
Imagine if someone sells a car engine, you want that motor for an engineering project that isn't a car. Then you find another vendor selling a car for 3x less than what the engine itself costs with a slightly inferior version of the engine, at a massive profit loss per car.

That doesn't meant the engine is cheap, it means that second vendor was retarded.
>>
>>376744986
>sony sold the ps3s at a loss
>sonys most successful system was the ps3
pick 1 and only 1
>>
>>376744638
That isn't even a argument.
CELL as it is, is a partially subsidized architecture. So how its subsidized changes how it works, because those decisions carry long term effects.
And when the PS3 is essentially a subsidiary for CELL, to start up mass production and PR, that also means any core flaw in CELL will carry over to HPC. Even if PS3 CELL is crippled by everything around it, meaning little to no potential except for tech demos.
>>
>>376745084
First one. They sold more PS1's and PS2's and made a higher profit.
>>
>>376745404
>sell more of a system
>make more profit
which proves nothing.

find an actual source that confirms the ps3's sold at a loss or kill yourself.
>>
>>376745545

it uses retail prices as well for some reason.

>>
>>376746007
Volta for consumers mid 2018, not much better performance / watt. 2080 around the performance of the Titan Xp.
>>

>>376746358
Would you be happy with a 2013 Earnings Call where the CFO stated "Unlike PS3, we are not planning a major loss to be incurred with the launch of PS4"

And he was right, PS4 didn't sell at a loss.
>>
>>376746738
>major loss at launch, not overall
>retard cant understand basic english
wooooooow
>>
Given how much the 6900k cost, I can't see any reasonable person ever getting an intel processor with more than 6 real cores just for gaymen any time soon
Seems like a kneejerk response to ryzen more than anything else given how perfectly happy they were to let mainstream sit at 4 cores for multiple generations in a row
>>
>>376746814
So you're moving the goalposts then? By the time the PS3 made a profit per unit sold, it's hardware was years out of date.
>>
So for real, is Ryzen 7 what to go for right now?

I really need to get off my 2500k and I was thinking about picking up a 1700x/1080 like next week. Tempted to wait for Vega but it seems like it's just going to float between the 1070/1080.
>>
>>376747169
nope, retards like yourself cant understand basic english apparently.

all you have to do is look at the ps3 sales early in its life to realize it wasnt selling very well at all and it wasnt until later that they started making money off of it.

retards like you dont realize there are static overhead costs on any system but that doesnt mean each one sells at a loss when it comes to manufacturing.

retards like you cant understand basic english either or the context of what the CFO said either.
>>
>>376747390
So you're saying the majority of PS3s were sold after 2010 when it finally made a profit per unit? Not even a large profit mind you compared to the $200~ range loss they hit early on.
>>
>>376747653
im saying you're a retard and cant into basic finance.
>>
>>376747335
That bench was probably Vega 11 desu.
>>
>>376747740
Then enlighten me on how the PS3 was more successful than the PS2 and PS1, because that's where this started.
>>
>>376747770
I haven't been looking at any of those benches that came out since I'm sure they're probably fudged in some way. If I thought Vulkan was going to catch on more I would wait but seeing how DX11 is still the primary in most games I get the feeling like Vega will be the same story as usual with AMD when it comes to the high end.
>>
>>376747897
>because that's where this started.
no, this started on you spurging out when someone said the cell wasnt as bad as you assumed it was.

even before that it started because you think more cores is a bad thing and im sure intel will come out with a terahertz processor in the next year or so.
>>
>>376748006
On the low end it'll be just under a 1080 Ti. If they actually fixed the pipeline bubbles it'll be above a Titan Xp
>>
>>376748079
Cell was a shitty dead end product. It'll live up there with Itanium as blunders.

cool assumptions bro, I have a 5960X, replaced a 980X, which replaced a QX6800

It would still be shit today. The SPEs were just four wide SIMD clusters each with zero branch predicting, and the PPE was an outdated POWER core. Something like AMDs APUs with the GPGPU meme is the closest equivalent as GCN is primarily a cluster of 16 wide SIMD cores.

I can upgrade my videocard, but the rest of my machine would end up being a bottleneck. So I find myself trying to choose between 5675-C and 6600K.
