So, Alan Wake is going away. What does that mean for a possible sequel?

https://twitter.com/remedygames/status/863012017833218049
>>
Remedy want to make a proper sequel, but no one will fund it since the first game under performed. It's a shame too. I really liked the first one. American Nightmare was meh, but it was still enjoyable
>>
Who cares?
>>
>>376711180
Still, having the game disappear because of a music licensing deal of all things is kinda fucked.
>>
>>376710982

Shit..... one of the best games on Steam disappearing? Fuck... I might have to stock up several copies for future people on Steam.
>>
Sam Lake already straight up said "Yes" to a sequel in an interview, so it's likely being made now.

I wonder if its the entire soundtrack that's the problem. If it was one song, I'd think they could relicense it or replace, unless they feel its too important or something.
>>
>>376711869
There's a couple licensed songs in there. 3 Poets of the Fall songs and Space Oddity by David Bowie, from off the top of my head. I'm pretty sure that if it were the Poets of the Fall songs that are the problem, they would relicense them in a heartbeat.
>>
Fucking music licenses. Rockstar try to cuck people by removing songs from the PC versions of GTA via """updates"""
>>
I already have Alan Wake and American Nightmare 100% completed with all the achievements on my 360, but I might re-buy them on Steam since both with the DLC is only like $5?
>>
>>376711980
Bowie died, so the licenses would have changed hands - I can see a greedy family getting all up in there.
>>
>>376711980
Completely forgot about the Bowie song in the credits. That's likely the most expensive song they licensed but it's for the credits. Replace that shit with a cover or some Poets of the Fall song.

American Nightmare is newer but very short
Buy both anyway due to the extremely attractive antagonist in American Nightmare.

I remember replaying Alan Wake years after I finished American Nightmare and completely forgot that Mr. Scratch was introduced at the end of the first game.

I liked the first game, didn't play the dlcs or the expansion.

90% means that it will be 4 dollars for both of them right?
>>
>>376712524

Alan Wake is the better package overall. Although American Nightmare is more replayable.

American Nightmare is like a small expansion that's very arcadey. It plays faster and gives you a lot of weapons to play with while improving on enemy design, which was braindead in the first one.

It's going to be the entire game apparently but yeah, I'm guessing its the Bowie song that's causing the issue. Still doesn't explain why they don't just get rid of it like GTA does through an update. It's only in the credits anyway, why not keep selling the game?

Might not be as easy to remove as it was in GTA

either way this shit has to stop, developers should pay a one time fee for using licensed tracks and be done with it, the music industry needs to crash and burn together with these jewish schemes
>>
>>376713979
Lump sum deals are often horrible.
>>
>>376712118

More than likely that's the case. The rights holders are probably asking for a sum comparable to the original fee. Remedy knows that there's no way a five year old game is going to sell enough to make paying the fee worthwhile, so they figure the best move is to just sell it dirt cheap while they still have the chance.

Good move Remedy. 10/10
>>
Why do devs do timed music licenses like this? Is there not some kind of "you can use this song in one product and sell that product as much as you want, for as long as you want" setup they could be going for?
>>
>>376713686
What's wrong with just adding someone to your friend list then trading?
>>
>>376714229
Some bands likely do that. Poets of the Fall, specially since they've worked with Remedy since the Max Payne days likely does something similar.
Bowie's agent on the other hand likely doesn't. Same with bands like Rolling Stones. Why would they do a lifetime deal when they can just keep asking for contract renewals for licensing their music?
>>
>>376714463
can't they just remove said song and replace it whatever else?

and Bowie's dead, so who gives a shit RIP
>>
>>376714463
Why ask for contract renewals when they know from previous examples that most devs wont bother and will just remove the song/stop selling altogether? If they're so concerned about having a cash stream, they could just negotiate a .5% royalty of all sales or something.

>>
>>376721542
>This industry needs an institute to save these games from publishers who decide "nah fuck you, no more game for you."
That's why we have piracy. Even Nintendo uses it, most of the NES/SNES games (possibly later consoles too) on the virtual console are literally just emulators they downloaded and then sold.
>>
>>376721542
>wanted to try the original Prey

Piracy is a doubled edge knife. A more official institute could preserve the games, while piracy the best you have is torrent sites and a bit of luck for older games. What if someone just doesn't upload an alan wake copy anywhere? Someone will still have it, but there's not many ways of contacting the entire internet with a request for a copy.

Video games are like Vegas. They sell the game for a few years and then they move on. They don't want you playing old games because you won't buy there new games. Again this is why we have piracy and emulation.

>>376711284
GTA3 had this problem.

>>376723062
And literally gets changed every twenty years because Disney keeps bribing them with millions of dollars because Mickey Mouse' license would have otherwise ran out decades ago.
>>
>why don't they just remove the music

Alan Wake uses videos for its cutscenes and credits. Music is encoded with the sound effects and voice work.

Unless they still have the original video/audio files to re-render with, it would be impossible to remove.

That's just my guess anyways. Companies should keep backups of this stuff but shit happens and files get deleted/backups get lost.
>>
>>376722761

>>376723408

>>
>>376723257

So, they fucked up the negotiations
>>

The first one, atmospherically, is one of the best games I've ever played. Very few if any devs do atmosphere as well as Remedy. The first 2 Max Payne games are evidence of this, they're still incredible to play

>we knowingly released a game that had music licenses that would require us to one day remove the game from sale if we didn't go to the strenuous effort of removing the offending music

Gee, thanks

I have like 8 games discontinued on steam and can still download them.

I really fail to see how it could be much more complex. The only way is if they somehow signed away the rights to the game in order to secure that music, which seems incredibly dumb.

Isn't there a song in it that's actually important to the plot?

Short-sightedness is a hallmark of this shitty industry. The film industry had this problem in its infancy which is why there are so many really early films that are lost to time, but they figured out the value of preservation pretty quickly. Meanwhile, devs are deleting source codes and original assets just to save room on their fucking hard drives to this day, no real effort is made to preserve anything and there are hundreds of games that are essentially unplayable outside of their old degrading hardware, tied up in copyright disputes where greed over who gets what share of the money ensures that no one makes anything from it, or are gutted by dead online features that will never return.

the credits for episode 2 was Poe.

Is there only two games in the series?

Why is it called a franchise? 2 games does not seem like enough to label something as a franchise

The real fucking problem is that the music industry still hasn't dragged their asses to the 21st century. Or more actually, they haven't been dragged by force. Legislation should start catching up to digital distribution and videogames. Record companies should be universally stripped of all rights to interfere with the use of music in anything that they've sold licenses to. The whole idea of an industry is production. If you create an industrial climate where you have the absolute right to keep profiting from everything you produce, the inevitable outcome of extrapolating that system to infinity is that you will not need to produce anything anymore. The things already in existence can provide your continued profits. It's completely rotten and needs to be taken behind the shed. If a set of laws is specifically made to ensure benefits to the tiniest minority, and it harms literally everything else, the law is broken and needs to be fixed. Laws are meant to protect you from harm, not guarantee a positive outcome and ban neutral and negative ones.

sam lake has been almost lifelong friends with POTF's lead, probably gets to license their music a lot cheaper too as a result so i doubt they're responsible.

If that were the case Max Payne 2 would've been on the chopping block a long time ago
