ITT: God tier open worlds.

In terms of things to do, variety of the atmosphere, the scope of the world itself and traversing the world in various ways.

Pic very related.

I really want to replay XCX, but every time I start to I remember how much I fucking hate Elma so I just end up turning off the game as soon as chapter 3 is over.

A world that entices you to -want- to explore without dangling a carrot in front of your face
>>
>>376670438
>A world that entices you to -want- to explore
This is why open world games are only good for one playthrough only. Exploration is no fun on a second playthrough when you've already seen everything.

Guess I'll go ahead and get the king of the genre out of the way
>>
>>376670550
Well, not necessarily. You just have to wait a long-ass time while you forget most of the stuff you saw, and can factor in nostalgia as a reason for returning.
>>
>>376670550
Okay? Reay value has nothing to do with a game's quality. Most people don't play any given game more than once. I haven't replayed a game since I was a kid and couldn't get new games whenever I wanted.
>>
I love XCX but fuck...the OST is repetitive and the game tries too hard im some stages to be a..........a quirky anime.

Beside that its top shit
>>
>>376670814
>Reay value has nothing to do with a game's quality.
It kind of does. Something like Bayonetta that encourages replays just simply offers more depth, gameplay wise, than a one and done experience like Xenoblade X.

Its takes far longer than the other classes to start getting good arts. The starting ones are just trash. At least others have some decent starting arts.
>>
>>376671285
Crackdown's map traversal is underrated. Finding actual ledges to climb up and jump around from is fun stuff. 2's wingsuit was neat, too.

They're different kind of games? How are you not getting that?

Gravity Rush's movement is really fun

My point is "exploration" doesn't really have much gameplay merit, its just looking at pretty things in the background mostly.

>>376672742
There's a place for exploration in games, since no other medium can quite provide what an open world can. People enjoy exploring in games, and something doesn't have to be complex or have a great ammount of depth to it in order to be good or satisfy someone's niche.
>>
>>376673000
Is this one of those "muh immersion" things?

Everything just feels so static in Xenoblade's world. Nothing feels alive.
>>

So you're that guy. Isn't there a speedrunning general you should be in?
>>
>>376674320
You don't have any room to be insulting others' taste if you actually like these shitty "you can do ANYTHING xDDD" open world games.
>>

I'm so glad I happened upon Sidon in the river and did the Zora kingdom first. The long road was a slog with no good equipment and all metal shit, was actually kinda challenging

hard mode WHEN
pls no health sponges
>>
>>376665268
with the soundtrack it was really a powerful experience
>>
>>376674515
I have bad news... hard mode just bumps every enemy color tier up by one, including silver enemies becoming gold, and adds enemies on floating platforms. That's it. Literally just damage sponges.
>>
>>376674648
And health regen for enemies.
Though maybe it'll be worth it if the bosses get bumped up too.
>>
>>376674591
except when my TV had shitty speakers and the first 45 seconds of BLACK TAR began to take its toll
>>
>>376665268
Fuck it. I'm buying this game tomorrow. Todays thread was so cool.
>>
>>376670550
Not when exploration is tied to gameplay like in Crackdown or Botw.
Just running around the world and reaching places becomes fun in itself even if you've been there before because you can always find a new way to get somewhere these games.
Also when the world feels alive and has stuff going on this is even better because you'll have more to engage with.

XCX does this as well and in addition it has great scenery and pretty much and endless amount of sidequests, many of which with their own stories.

They aren't usually my favorite games, but I just can't see how someone wouldn't enjoy exploring a fleshed out open world game like Shenmue or San Andreas or Red Dead Redemption. That's fine I guess, if you don't get the whole "muh immersion" thing you don't get it/play singleplayer games for a different reason than me

No, it isn't fun to do a second playthrough of BOTW. No one likes starting over at the great plateau with trash gear and one fucking stamina wheel.

>>376665268
XCX could have been GOTY if it didn't male Elma and Lin mandatory in your party all the time.

The real kicker will be how fast Thunderblight *teleports behind me*, and if blocking lasers instantly breaks your shield and does splash damage
>>
>>376675196
>I just can't see how someone wouldn't enjoy exploring a fleshed out open world game
Because 90% of the time in open world games is spent just walking around looking at things. Games like XCX are guilty of this too. It's boring.
>>
>>376675390
I am, but I'm dropping it for now so I can do a hard mode run with minimum hearts and stamina bar for maximum artificial difficulty and a chance to play differently than I previously did.
>>
>>376675765
Well more power to you if you enjoy that, but minor changes like that just aren't enough to make me want to drop another 100 hours on a game
>>
>>376675390
Oh gee, its sucks when you don't have all your progress when you restart a game with progression. I sure hate replaying Metroid because I don't have a speedboost or chare beam anymore. Who'd ever play that game more than once?
>>
I'm playing Horizon Zero Dawn and I just got to the part where you leave the village and go find your mom. Right now its pretty fucking boring. Does it get better?

I know what you meant, we're just two different kinds of players. I enjoyed Abzu. Playing games just for "gotta go fast" qualities is fine, gameplay is what makes it a game.

What the fuck else is there to do in Xenoblade besides kill things?

>>
If XCX had ARPG combat it'd be a 20/10 GOAT, the only thing I didn't like about the game was the combat.
>>
>>376677064
A second playthrough of BOTW will take at least 50--60 hours for most people because they'll do the shrines and shit again
>>
>>376665268
Xenoblade Chroncles X is great, but I get exhausted from playing that game. Only like 30 hours in and I have no desire to go back even though exploring the parts of the world I was able to get to was a blast.
My favorite is Breath of the Wild. No open world in a game I've played has ever come close.
>>
>>376675924
GREATNESS AWAITS
>>
>>376675478
They were only required for the main story and some affinity quests and that makes up like maybe 10-15% of this game's content?
>>
>>376677183
Master Infinite Overdrive and you can more or less spam attacks like it was an ARPG
>>
>>376677553
Theyre required for their own affinity missions, each other's missions, Lao's, Irina's, Doug's, Gwin's, L's, Vandham's, Nagi's and the Wrothian's affinity missions, and the story. That's over half of the substantial quests in the game
>>
>>376677638
I don't think you've ever played an ARPG

Doesn't exactly have the wow factor in its visuals or variety or anything like that.
But the fact that I can run into the god damn Dragon himself in a random forest in the middle of the night makes it god-tier, imo.
>>
>>376675229
I thought these choices were supposed to be hard. Did you not notice that picking the top one automatically grants you the bottom one? Honestly it's even better since you end up with "good in every sense of the word."
>>
>>376677758
Assuming the A stands for Action then yes I have. Matter of fact this game is listed as an Action RPG, it just incorporate a more strategic way of going about but you can easily kill off the cool down period with Infinite Overdrive and maybe some augments.
>>
>>376677418
So, no? Guess ill return it then. I only rented it.
>>
>>376678403
ARPG is something like Kingdom Hearts.
>>
>>376677776
I'm not gonna argue that this isn't one of my favorite games of all time or anything, but I don't think it was the open world that was any special about it.
>>
>>376677776
>early game is in big open areas
>end game is in closed cramped areas
>>
>>376678530
Practically the same shit except base attacks are automatic in Xenoblade but you choose commands and move about the field freely like you would in Kingdom Hearts and wait for the cooldown before you can use them again. Did you actually play Xenoblade?

>>
>>376678891
Kingdom Hearts will let you do different attacks if you jump and then attack, has WAY more combo options and general attack options than Xenoblade. I don't think you've played KH.
>>
>>376678530
No, ARPG is any RPG that isn't turn-based. Diablo is an ARPG and it's a hell of a lot more passive than Xenoblade.
>>
>>376679030
Then what you meant to say was that Xenoblade X should have bad more action like gameplay , because this game is an Action RPG. Sounds to me like you haven't played many ARPGs
>>
>>376678912
Probably the virgin.
