Dragon Quest VIII is my go to game for when things are looking down and I need a proper adventure to get my mind off things.

Not papers please or war of mine, that's a given.
Try dirty bomb if you have aiming skill, Far Cry 4 is a good one to feel good, Far Cry Blood Dragon will totally bring you up though, so get that for sure.

Yeah, Papers please is soul-crushing and near masocore difficulty once it gets going. Nasty game.

Stardew Valley or Harvest Moon: Wonderful Life are great for getting lost. They play similarly, are similar levels when it comes to difficulty, and have that "just one more round" addictiveness that can burn entire days with no problem.
