Macho culture, games are seen as something for nerds so it's kind of shameful to work on them. Only acceptable games are COD and sports games but those are too expensive to make and no investors will fund them

Ubisoft Brazil made shovelware for the Wii and DS

Mexican here. There is a compsci branch at my Uni but they have never made anything worthwhile. We do have the dubious honor of having a branch of Gameloft in Baja California; in case you never heard of Gameloft they make GTA and COD clones that apparently sell pretty well.

Also I know this isn't a blog but I once applied for a job as a project manager at Gameloft. Refused the offer because

It's a difficult industry to get a foothold, any newcomer gets to compete against Japan and USA who have far more established industries and auxiliaries. Besides that, any bank or almost any other company pays way more for decent programmers.

We do have one or two indie studios over here in Brazil, but nothing that amazing. There was that tokusatsu x-com. Those guys were brazilians.

Nah I'm working full shift on a hardware shop fixing computers for soccer moms and old people. Pays well and since I live alone I see no reason to find a better job. Only recently have I gotten into developing games but as of right now it's more of a hobby. Well, simply put there is no fucking support for the industry here. Nintendo peaced out of the country because the taxes are absurd.

Brazil just doesn't really make a lot of things. Lots of cultural stuff, yes, but not much in the way of tech shit itself. Mostly oil drilling and a few key things in particular, but videogames are just a nono, so whoever wants to make something has to pretty much do it from the ground up.
