>tfw you buy used memory card/cartridge
>tfw you check the data before wiping it
>it belonged to a kid that clearly loved it

I-... Its cool, I wanted to buy another one anyways... ;-;
>>
>Burn and store copy of data contained on it to my computer HD
>Erase memory card
>Will probably never use data saved from it again but I like to be sure and archive everything in case he shows up and needs it some day
>>
>>376562875
isn't there some eceleb connected to Giantbomb that was going to produce a documentary about finding all the real life people decades later who he bought old memory cards from to give them back and discuss why they sold it and talk about the game saves?
>>
>>376563172
Do memory cards even store personally identifiable data?

I had 3 8mb memory cards, your pic was 2 of them. I only have the original black one now, and I wonder how many memories I've left behind.
>>
>>376563290
Only if the game asks for it
>>
>>376563290
For games that let you name characters. A lot of people use their real name or usernames that they may have also used on an old forum or something. From there it wouldn't be impossible to track down the real person.
>>
>>376563597
You might be onto something with forum usernames.

I don't know how you'd be able to narrow down real names though. Good luck sifting through thousands of Tylers, Brads, and Ryans who have ever played a video game at one point in their lives.
>>
>>376563172
that sounds super interesting. Any more info on it?
>>
I bought some PSP memory sticks a couple months ago and couldn't bring myself to delete the mix of mid-2000s emo, punk, alternative and raprock that was stored on it.

Backed it up to my PC and saved it forever.
>>376563597
good luck finding someone IRL off of a need for speed playthrough named "Kevin". My original xbox I bought this year does have a gamertag on it.
>>
>>376563841
>>376563879
It's not just the first name alone or usernames, if you bought the memory card from them years ago or bought it online years ago you at least know what state they were from and what year they were in that state.
>>
>>376564118
kevin that lived in florida in 2017??

you have no clue how long that memory card has been sitting in that thrift store or flea market booth. or where it was before that.

>Get a pre-owned Gamecube with memory cards and Melee included
>Playing around with Melee
>Oh the previous owner made pictures!
>It's all Peach/Zelda upshots
To this day I'm uncertain how much jizz got on the system.
>>
>>376562875
>find ps2 in electronics recycling depot
>busted and smashed to heck
>pull out the memory card (red 8mb)
It's a little chipped on the corner but it looks fine otherwise. I wish I had a ps2 to see what was on it.
>>
>>376564458
Get a PS2 then. They're a dime a dozen, cost next to nothing, and it's a decent system.

>I had my ps2 for like a month with GTA Vice City running until i could afford one with money from chores.
>>
>>376563000
As stupid as it sounds, it's quite a noble thing.
It's part of somebody's past, perhaps even childhood memories, that you're preserving.

You are a kind person, anon.
>>
>>376564741
I can't buy online due to problems with paypal.
>>
>pre-owned gamecube
>memory cards included
>start playing melee with siblings
>won't save
>eventually cut our losses and reset the system to check out/delete the last guy's save data
>it's just Animal Crossing
I was floored to see that a single game could take so much space and felt bad about deleting it.
>>
>>376565019
Craigslist. Hell, some retailers might still have them.
>>
>>376565102
Isn't craiglist that old site that people put up sports items for blowjobs on? I vaguely remember buying tires from some guy on there once long ago.

>packaging two 8MB cards was somehow more cost-effective than packaging one 16MB card
A 16MB card would have slightly different internal components than an 8MB card, and overall would use less materials. They could more or less charge the same amount for less material that achieves a similar end result (net total of 16MB storage).

What the fuck, Sony.

>The hard drive is full of metal music, A THOUSAND SAVES for all the good fucking games, his savegame name for splinter cell or something was PUNKNEVERDIES or something similar.

>I left it all fucking there, used the second save slot if needed, listened to the music, it was a fucking trip man.

>You will never hang out with this probably based man.
>He has probably moved on, given up being a punk and is now depressed working a shit job like the rest of us.

Stay safe, punk man.

Craigslist is like the 4chan of business transactions.

Pretty much anything is allowed as long as it isn't criminally illegal. And its users have taken this liberty to some odd extremes.
>>
>>376565532
Looking on it brings up a dozen ads for $20 ps2 consoles. I might try Kijiji too when I have more free time and gas money to spare.
The red card itself has a small hole in the bottom among the cracks and chips in it.
>>376565503
Take out the faulty cap so it doesn't crap out on you too. I'm too inept to open my own xbox buy I might as well tell you.
>>
>>376562875

>buying used handhelds
I swear, most of them used to belong to irresponsible children or stoners, so they're usually filthy and poorly cared for.

The only time I never had a problem with a used handheld was when I bought a Vita. And that's only because no one fucking likes the Vita except weebs.
>>
If you traded your memory cards what games would be on them?Anything interesting?
>>
>>376562875
>>376565091
Reminds me of a video I recently watched:

>guy visits abandoned places
>explores some small house in the middle of nowhere
>finds stuff that used to belong to some depressed old guy that left home to live there
>among the things is an original DS with games, including Animal Crossing
>old guy apparently died a few years before explorer guy found his things

Makes me feel sad how all of his games were the last things that brought him joy. All those villagers were the last friends he ever had.

I would have brought all his games to his grave and left them there, since it would be too late to bury them with him.

Also sick trips
>>
>>376566780
Nah, it would be mostly JRPGs and platformers. My youngster tastes were the epitome of casual and weeb-casual.
>>
>>376566780
Two DQVIII saves with 200+ hours each and a Digimon World 4 save with 100-ish hours. I really like da grindan game.
>>
>>376563000
I don't have a reader for PS cards (yet) but I've been doing that with cartridges (via kazzo & Retrode).
It's not like I'll ever do anything with the data but it just seems neat to preserve it when you find someone else's saves already on a cart. Especially if they have unique character names.
>>
>Buy second hand PS1 memory card
>it keeps getting corrupt data but it doesn't interfere with actual data

Is this normal? I usually backup on PS2 ones, so I don't care, but is it going to die?
>>
>>376567594
Corrupt data isn't good anon. I never see this with my cards.
>>
>>376566780
You'd get all my JRPG saves and my brother/sister incest h-doujins.
>>
I only ever used two save files in Ocarina of Time because I didn't want to delete the one that was already on the cartridge when I bought it used.

Wonder what BREN-JOE plays now.
>>
>>376566780
I transferred most of my shit to my PS3, so I don't really think you'd get that much. Just some RPGs, my completed San Andreas file, and some random games here and there.
>>
>>376565264
Was that your first blowjob?
>>
>>376570391
Anon no
did you put up those ads
>>
>>376569108
Bren joe is probably two siblings.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
