The writing is really solid, and mechanically it's super unique. It looks pretty good, especially for a PS1 game, and has a neat style to it. It's pretty difficult, but it's fun as long as you can get the hang of the combat and crafting. Some people get put off by having to switch weapons often. The soundtrack is also fantastic, and really helps out with the atmosphere.

Yes, because having no random battles and instead having encounters based on the world was so common back then.

Having group attacks where 2 or 3 party members together creates a new move was so common back then.

Having over 10 endings and being able to fight the final boss literally whenever you wanted is such a COMMON thing in JRPGs, so run of the mill.

I never really got the appeal of Chrono Trigger. It's definitely pretty good, and it innovated for it's time, but I wouldn't exactly call it the best. The combat's generally pretty easy and feels like Grandia without any of the counterattack, party movement, or stunning mechanics.
Gear is generally straight upgrades with the occasional added effect, though towards the end there's at least a bit of choice.
It really just feels like an above-average JRPG.

The Abyss battle system is LITERALLY Symphonia's with more features.

The story and cast in Abyss is fucking fantastic, what the fuck are you on about? Yes, the party members are assholes, but a large chunk of them grow out of it and become a lot of tolerable and sociable with each other (except Anise, FUCK ANISE). I think they're equals, because CC wouldn't be as good as it is without it's connection to CT.
They're two parts of one whole, like Earthbound and Mother 3. They compliment each other.
My only gripe with CC is the lack of combo attacks and battles being a tad monotonous, but after playing both, I couldn't have one without the other.
CC was such a great experience to play through fully. I did multiple runs.

FFV is better than VI and only nostaligafags who played VI when it came out in think it's better. Since V never released outside jap most people don't think it's better.

Played them both recently for the first time and V has much better gameplay.

I wonder if anyone at IGN has even played Planescape or they're just throwing it in there for good boy points.

Witcher 3 is a terrible choice. It was a memorable rpg in an era where there was no rpg games to compete with it. It doesn't hold up to many games off this list and definitely not holding up to most rpg's on this list.
Vagrant Story is a tougher call. It was a beautiful game when it came out and that was the main draw to the game. The game was enjoyable, but now it looks like shit since it was a ps1 game.
I agree completely with Diablo II. It is basically a blueprint for all modern loot grindan games.
Secret of Mana is nice, but Seiken Densetsu III (it's japanese release only sequel) is the superior game in the series. I'm sure this was only mentioned because no one outside of Japan would know a shit about the japanese only sequel.
Planescape:Torment makes perfect sense here. It has a thought provoking story and uses the classic DnD style of combat. I think a more modern game could also fill this slot like Divinity: Original Sin, but I digress.
World of Warcraft is tough to place on a list because it is one of the most influential games of all time and yet it is a steaming pile of crap. You can't go into this game today and enjoy it. You either have a friend goad you into it or you are still addicted to the skinner box features that have been in since it's initial launch.
Pokemon Yellow kind of makes sense in that a Pokemon game should be on a top ten list of RPG's. Maybe, this was put on this list as a way to advertise the game to a newer generation that may have only heard about RED/BLUE from their friends/family.
Baldur's Gate 2 is a definite must on any top ten list nothing much more to say.
FFVI my personal favorite game of all time. I find it hard to place on a top ten list since it has so many flaws and unused assets/stories in it. I think FFVII is more influential of a game and should probably be put ahead of FFVI in a list.

FF5 is good. But it does ape some stuff from FFIV in terms of art assets. I'm not calling it lazy because they made the Job system really cool in it. It is probably the best job system in any game.

It's very PROLIFIC and ICONIC but not really a great RPG in anyway.

Pokemon was a pretty unique twists on the genre with the capture/train system.
They tried to please everyone by having RPGs of different style and gameplay.

I agree Dark Souls should definitely be in the list, it is a genre defining game and one of the most important source of inspiration of the decade.

I'd like to see someone make a list with more recent titles. As much as I believe that there are cult classics, I don't like seeing games being untouchable due to their age alone.

Second, RPGs are based off tabletop systems WHICH ARE MULTIPLAYER. The fact that roleplaying with other people is possible means WoW is more of an RPG than anything that fucking list has.

this is akin to breath of the wild but on 199x.
