Either way PS1 just had a massive collection of fantastic games. Technical limitations asides its the library that always matters. Its the same reason why consoles continue to exists in a world of much more impressive PC systems: games matter, not hardware.

except that's false. For one thing, a good chunk of the best PS1 games had PC ports such that if you had a good PC in 1998-1999, you really didn't have much reason to own it. Even Metal Gear Solid was on PC

The system couldn't handle shooters very well, fighting games sucked on the console compared to the Saturn, it's platformers were mostly forgettable except for maybe Croc and Tomba. Also, surival horror? please, Resident Evil was on PC and Silent Hill 1 is overrated shit.

Saturn had Sakura Wars, Panzer Dragoon Sagas, Dragonforce, Wachenroder and many others which unfortunately never saw a release or publicity outside of Japan, but any J-RPG enthusiast knows that the Saturn's JRPG library was on par with, if not better than the PS1's and it would have killed the PS1 in that department internationally had the president of Sega of America at the time not been a fuckhead

Final Fantasy 7 was good, yet is one of the most overrated RPG's ever imho and it was available on PC in North America and Europe by 1998 anyway, same goes for FF8. Chrono Cross was a poor follow-up to Chrono Trigger that never has deserved the praise it has gotten from secondary rpg players who think innovation is a substitute for fun. Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean the Second Story are both fantastic. Final Fantasy Tactics as well, but the original North American PS1 release is so poorly translated it is damn near unplayable. Koudelka was fun and so was Breath of Fire. Lunar Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2 Complete both came out on Saturn.

I'm not saying the JRPG library on the PS1 isn't great, but I hardly think that makes it the superior console. Objectively speaking, in terms of its hardware and its game library, the PS1 was shit compared to PC, the N64 and Saturn (as far as Japan is concerned). I mean unless you LIKE downgraded PC ports.

Because it was easy to pirate and fairly cheap.

The Saturn's only noteworthy JRPGs are Wachenroder, the TO:LUCT port, Shining Force III and Sakura Wars, all of which are wildly overrated, Panzer Dragoon Saga is a fucking rail shooter and as much of a RPG as Witcher games, all of the other noteworhty stuff like Culcept or Langrisser was also on PSX, even niche Saturn stuff like Druid is on PSX.
PSX had anything, it had the full power of Square AND Enix, it had Artdink games, Koei games, Tri Ace games, cult classics like Gunparade March, niche stuff like London Tantei Monogatari, Growlanser, Mystic Ark, Assault Suit Valken II, Battle Hunter, Bardysh, even super obscure series like First Queen, the PSX library destroys any other JRPG library of the time, it's not even a contest, the Saturn's library can't compete on any level, especially when the number and quality of exclusives is so low, do you think people care about playing a slightly fancier looking Langrisser when they're also on PSX?
