Likewise, when you're a kid, even your 7th birthday seems like a big deal. Biologically, you're far removed from even a 5 year old. And obviously the same is true at 12 or 15 or 18. And these milestones seem like huge steps. Becoming a teenager means spending 12 whopping years not being. When your 13, 12 years was your entire life. So it's a big deal

When you're 36, 12 years was a third of your life. You were 24 years old 12 years ago and you weren't a whole lot different then. If anything has changed, you have more responsibilities.

It also makes the 13 year old's milestone seem rather arbitrary. So what? He's still young as fuck and he will be until he hits 20.

This is why adults use the word "kid" to refer to both children and teenagers. Teenager is not a meaningful distinction in the adult world. It's only meaningful to other kids.
