Kind of, the anime gives you backstory on how Noctis met the other 3 guys. The movie was just the invasion of Insomnia from the trailers but with a random royal guard fighting through it rather than the boyband.

I think you're underestimating just how madly in love Noctis was with Luna though. The guys are definitely Noctis' friends, but they are also more or less his employees. Noctis isn't responsible for what happened to Ignis, but Luna died essentially because he wasn't strong enough to save her. The whole chapter is poorly executed and doesn't give the player much of a reason to care about Luna, but Noctis had every right to be upset. He meets up with Luna for the first time in probably a decade and pretty much gets her killed. He felt like he failed his entire mission.
