I remember when I first met Hikaru in SMT IV. She was some cheerful teenage girl in a school girl uniform, and she stood out drastically in comparison to everyone else in Tokyo. It was intriguing to me because she was such an outlier and I wanted to see where her story was going. Then it turned out she was Lucifer in disguise and everything made sense.

Asahi is like Hikaru but without any good reason for being as cheerful as she is.

I feel like they turned Navarre into a silly mascot and only included him because he was basically a meme among SMT IV players. He was an asshole in SMT IV. Sure, you're never meant to take him seriously there, and he became the butt of many jokes, but he feels more like a caricature of that minus the overly negative traits in Apocalypse. The Navarre in SMT IV was a coward. He treated Casualries like second-class citizens, even the ones who were Samurai. He put the party in dangerous situations just to get at Walter and Flynn. He has a mental breakdown following the first domain, and while humorous for players, it did show how fragile Navarre was as a person. Apocalypse Navarre was like they took Navarre from the Jonathan manga and made him a ghost.

I don't mind Nozomi as much because even if she was a minor character in SMT IV, she was still shown to be a savvy Hunter. Apocalypse is more expanding on that. Being SMT though, I feel like they should have shown her weaker, more human side instead of having her be so positive. Let her be more ruthless like a Hunter. Show her being shrewd.

I'll give Samurai like Gaston a pass because Samurai grew up in a world far different to Tokyo. Gaston wouldn't feel totally out of place as Navarre's brother in SMT IV, but I think that having a character more influenced by the angels would have been cool.

Toki and Hallelujah are poor excuses for members of the Ring of Gaea/Ashura-kai. They might as well not have even been associated with them.

The dungeons were better. I think they just wanted a low-risk title they could recycle a ton of assets on to test the newer developers and the fanbase's reaction. Easy way would be stat reduction, refusal to act on turn, fleeing in battle, that kind of stuff. It can also be reflected in branching dialogue. It makes sense in Massacre route since that's what Dagda has been trying to get you to do the whole game and he keeps telling you about it, but replaying it and doing the Bonds route it really does feel tacked on since all the actual threats have been eliminated at that point (Lucifer, Merkabah, Divine Powers).

The Demons in 4's universe especially have an explicitly parasitic relationship with humans, stemming from the weakness YHVH gave them when he created it. Killing YHVH doesn't change the fact that most of them, like the Divine Powers, are horrible monsters. And the ones who pretend not to be only swoop in to save mankind from their monstrous brethren in exchange for their own reverence.
