It kills me that this guy is potentially so dangerous, considering its rocks follow you at a decent speed, so you'd have to do some clever moving with pikmin in order to avoid them getting crushed.

Because what invariably happens is you go and scout out alone and use this retard to kill all the enemies in the area before making him kill himself.

I really want a good balance of 1 & 2's positives, Miyamoto's goal with 3 was that but I feel he failed in that regard (still a good game though). I want all of what you said but I want the large scope of Pikmin 2 with all the collectables & upgrades you can acquire, but I just don't see how it could work well.
