When, long ago, the gods created Earth
In Jove's fair image Man was shaped at birth.
The beasts for lesser parts were next designed;
Yet were they too remote from humankind.
To fill the gap, and join the rest to Man,
Th'Olympian host conceiv'd a clever plan.
A beast they wrought, in semi-human figure,
Filled it with vice, and called the thing a Nigger.

You can appreciate the other incredibly interesting themes of his work without agreeing that everyone who isn't English is inferior. Lovecraft was so racist that other white people weren't white enough for him.
It's possible to appreciate parts of work while reviling other pieces of it. Him being a giant racist doesn't make some of the ideas he presented in his fiction less interesting to discuss.

Only because those that followed him and wrote more interesting works had their storeis and creations credited to him. A lot of "lovecroftian" works are purely those who followed him and had nothing to do with his works other than other-worldly fiction which he helped popularise at best.

Assuming you don't class Richard Stallman as a writer, and only consider by works of fiction written, and don't consider works of fiction written specifically -for- the game in question (at which point fuck Knaak and fuck Metzen, but they did have an effect)
And also assuming you don't consider historical texts such as the Bible, which have influenced many games, and only consider works with a definite author,
then Lovecraft is a decent contender, but Tolkien ends up getting his hands on far more because goddamn there's elves and orcs everywhere.

There's reports of shit like that happening. But I don't think it's as cute/romantic as he's imagining.
But Lovecraft and Greene's relationship is this big weird thing anyway, dude never kissed her, never said he loved her (somehow Sonia describes him as an excellent lover), she wasn't really interested in him but admired his writing. And both got married, maybe love between weirdoes really is blind and all that faggotry.

That's a good point. I never beat FC2...I remember that the Jackal's tapes gave me chills, though. At the time I hadn't read Heart of Darkness, which also gave me chills.

What I really liked about FC2 was the sort of moral detachment from the surroundings. The protagonist barely exists there, and the only thing that lets you know you're human is that you had to rely on your buddies, whose pasts and stories were out of your pay grade. That's how I want to feel when I explore a land that's well beyond law.

I'm not feeling this in FC4; I wish the protagonist was a nobody and that the bad guy and his gang was more ambiguous.

I've read or listened to his every single work. I absolutely love how well he presents the theme of something alien and incomprehensible invading their peaceful, ordered lives. Only someone who really despised and feared those unlike him could portray it with such lucidity and almost palpable revulsion. If anything, his works only benefited from him being as he was. That and

They took Niggerman from me and won't let me see him!
>>
>>376433805
But he's completely right. Dogs don't "love" you. They need to have a leader and be part of a pack because that's how they evolved idiot.

The interesting thing about Lovecraft is that he wasn't a particularly stellar writer. His prose could sometimes be obtuse and difficult to navigate, and he couldn't write dialogue for shit. But you don't care when reading him because the ideas and the world he paints are so damn good that they drag you in. Pickman's Model, for example, has an ending you can see from a mile away, yet it's still really fucking scary.

>>
Pretty much anybody from the past was pretty racist, and any number of other -ists

You know, people who are alive today are a package deal. They're still here and we have to deal with their whole shit. But with the dead, we can -- and must -- pick them apart. We have to see what belongs dead, with them, and what we carry forward. If we wiped history and culture of all the people who harbored awful ideas, we'd be left with only babies

Lovecraft was shithead and an asshole. Lucky for us, he's dead, and his stories are completely amoral and fantastic. So whatever. Still, maybe a little less hero worship going forward. He wasn't one of those.
>>
>>376433805
part of his charm.
>>
>>376427579
He created a subgenre of horror that can fit in many places. Cosmic horror can be used effectively in just about any setting. (Darkest Dungeon, Event Horizon, The Secret World, Bloodborne, World of Warcraft, Amnesia TDD, The Mist, etc.) He wrote a whole lot of works and had a very creative mind when it came to monsters and their descriptions. Go on wikipedia and find the list of old gods in the lovecraft universe and read about them. While doing that, google the names of each of them and look at all the art people have created from his descriptions. He paved the way for some very interesting monster design and an interesting approach to horror.
>>

A Klee painting named Angelus Novus shows an angel looking as though he is about to move away from something he is fixedly contemplating. His eyes are staring, his mouth is open, his wings are spread. This is how one pictures the angel of history. His face is turned toward the past. Where we perceive a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe which keeps piling wreckage upon wreckage and hurls it in front of his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing from Paradise; it has got caught in his wings with such violence that the angel can no longer close them. The storm irresistibly propels him into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows skyward. This storm is what we call progress.

UNITED AT LAST

While it's true he had a massive impact on pop culture, it wasn't a direct one. Lovecraft's work is almost nothing like the shit you'll find in your average Lovecraftian video game. All the cliches like madness and suicide and giant monster men actually only appear a handful of times throughout the hundreds of stories he wrote. Lovecraft's greatest influence was inspiring a generation of younger writers who took after him through direct correspondence. Most notably was August Derleth, who really watered down the whole mythos and turned it into good vs evil men vs monsters. It's just an extended effect of that trickling down of his ideas that we see everywhere today. It's one of those kitschy themes that gets draped over some crappy indie game to stand out, like what happened to zombies only on a smaller scale because zombie AI is braindead.
>>
Lovecraft was probly just jaded because he saw a couple niggers with hot white women and rationalized that he himself must not be the problem. Just becuase someone has a good imagination and is successful writing novels doesn't make them smart or an authority on any subject in particular, except maybe writing novels.

Why the fuck has no one attempted to do an actual Eternal Champion based franchise?
Not Chaos and all the shit that Warhammer and DnD took from Moorcock, i'm talking full on Corum or Hawkmoon game.

Or dare i say it, Elric of Melnibone.
Oswald Bastable is also a good choice. Or just Dancers at the End of Time point and click.

LA noire still does far too much of the deductive work for the player.
The best detective movies/books keep the deductions of the detective/MC obscure until the end of the film, and the reader/watcher is left to figure things out for himself.
In LA Noire, you more or less always know what information is relevant and what is not because of your handy little book.
Even if you pay almost no attention at all, the game will still do most of the work for you.

If you're going to be edgy for the sake of it at least know what you're talking about.

In my opinion, the personal views of the author outside of what is written aren't really relevant to how good the writing is, but Lovecraft's racism was inextricably woven into his writing, and so it becomes a thing to discuss when talking about his writing.

I think that his uniquely extreme racism produced works that have basically brought to life a perspective that many people don't have in an alien and novel way. It also stems from a more primal feeling as well of fear of the unknown. That's what makes his racism laced writings interesting. It explores a feeling which despite being influenced by a terrible ideology didn't actually focus on the specifics of that ideology.

every presentation of a vampire draws from Bram Stoker.
every presentation of a zombie draws from John Russo and George Romero. Yeah, a script-writer is still a writer.

which are more common in video games - vampires and zombies, or cthlulus? Because don't pretend you mean anything substantial from his works, you just mean "eldritch abominations". That's literally all the influence he's had, contributed some monster designs that a handful of games have used alongside hundreds of other monster designs from hundreds of other sources.

Also, you can't pretend that manga authors haven't influenced Japanese games. Those cliches and stuff didn't originate in Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.

nah, he's just not a good writer, and you were stupid and impressionable when you got tricked into thinking his shit was above mediocre.

>it's bad but you don't think it's bad
when has this ever been remotely true? shit is shit.
>>
>>376453918
Have you even given his writing a chance? I was so sick of "le Cthulhu maymay" that I was ready to write him off even before reading any of his work. They I read Mountains of Madness and he was WAY ahead of his time. I got hooked and I've now read almost all of his stories. They're good and incredibly unique.

One thing I've noticed is that as soon as his racism comes up in a thread you get a bunch of people who immediately start saying his work is shit. You niggers are truly pathetic.

The Complete Fiction of H. P. Lovecraft is great to own on a shelf, but for pure reading pleasure wherever you might find yourself and complete with helpful annotations, I recommend The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories, The Thing on the Doorstep and Other Weird Stories and The Dreams in the Witch House and Other Weird Stories, edited by the prominent Lovecraft Scholar S. T. Joshi.

The ending seemed like they just wanted to bank on the same effect that Red Dead had, but it was done very poorly. I have no sympathy for Cole as a character while John is a fantastic character.

Who's your favourite Lovecraft god?

Mine has to be Nyarlathotep. I especially love when he's used in other works not necessarily a part of the Lovecraft universe. It really drives home that he's omnipotent across dimensions.

The most amusing thing to me about this screencap is that they think the way to go about "subverting" a man's literary legacy is to write fanfiction based on his work. That's not subverting a legacy, that's contributing to it.

The second most amusing thing to me about this screencap is that "So much Lovecraft work by the diverse crowd is about love, finding yourself. HOPE" which is absolutely not what Lovecraft's work was about. Lovecraft's work was about fear and he has a number of stories wherein the progatonist is horrified when he finds himself, usually because he finds proof that he swapped minds with a fungus monster for a decade or that he's descended from a humanoid fish monster.

Also worth noting that one of Lovecraft's biographers, ST Joshi, is quick to point out some of the last letters Lovecraft ever penned, in which he expresses regret for the more extreme views he had as a young man. ST Joshi is Indian, by the way.

It probably didn't go down exactly like that but Lovecraft's ex-wife confirmed that on multiple occasions they'd have houseguests and he'd go on long rants about how the Jews are ruining everything and she'd be like "dude I'm right here"
>>
>>376462406
I really dislike Nyarlanthotep, it is just way to prevalent and a lot of people use it completely wrong. Same with Cthulu, which save for a few instances have completely lost its unknown and mysterious qualities.

These days I really believe the right way to use the Mythos is to use it as a base for your own, like Bloodborne and B.R.P.D.

This often repeated and ill informed "opinion" is a testament to how, in actuality, underrated and underread Lovecraft is, because it reflects the ill informed notions of others that claim adherence to his work and all that is "Lovecraftian" without even understanding what "Lovecraftian" means, because they saw Cthulhu in a picture book or on a t-shirt or whatever instead of simply reading the man.

Nah nah, other 1920s racist met Lovecraft and told him to scale it back a bit. They thought HE was too racist, even for them. He used to rant about the Jews until his wife reminded him she was Jewish and told him to clam down for the day. And honestly his work wouldn't be what it is without that hate. Adds a whole new interesting layer to his stories with the recurring theme of disgust at abominable crossbreeds of humans and weird dark things that lurk in the depths.

Same f@m. You can do pretty much anything with Lovecraft mythology, so you might as well do something subtle, refrained, and unique.
>>
>>376427579
The thing that Lovecraft did that made him immortal, is put a lot of his stuff in the public domain and create shared universes with other writers who did the same.
So while if you want to write Conan stories you have to get the official license, anybody can make a Lovecraft game and you don't even have to avoid being open about that.
