This is why Tifa is Cloud's girl and not Aerith. Aerith is Zack's girl and Aerith/Cloud's fling pre-mental breakdown only strengthens it (which is based entirely on player choice anyway). If anything you can view Zack and Aerith as parental figures to Cloud.

Cloud was raised to adulthood by that mother, then volunteered to join the shinra army. I don't remember cloud ever meeting aeris in crisis core, you only interact with cloud in headquarters, at junon and then on the mission to nibelheim. Aeris stays in the slums the entire game.

Like you said yourself, Elena joined the Turks after the start of FF7, that's why she's not in CC. I think she replaced her older sister which is why she became an important member so quickly.

As for Cissnei, she has appeared in other spinoffs and I can only assume that they had plans for her in a sequel that hasn't yet materialized.

The only difference is that in the original, he got suckered when he thought the coast was clear and went to check on Cloud, while in CC he goes down fighting.

Prior FF protagonists have been usually successful in their own personal goals. We assumed Cloud would be successful too but it turned out he failed in some regards. He also came with some baggage which is also unlike most protagonists we received at the time. In the end, he came out feeling a lot more human.

Also, his goal to join SOLDIER wasn't quite out of his reach. It was noted that he did pass the physical portion of the test but failed in another. I think one of the finer points of his character is that while he failed to join early on, his development throughout his journey would have more than qualified him by the end.

Still, FF6 is somewhat of a mixed bag and at most, a chunk of the party's personal goals are accomplished near the end of the game. So I guess it's better to say that they don't fail to complete, but rather that it's heavily delayed. Some goals aren't completed though, like Locke's desire to resurrected his beloved although he does find some peace after the entire thing.

In FF5, Bartz just mainly wants to travel and adventure. He succeeded in that from start to finish. I don't quite remember what goals the other party members may have had.

Obviously, I'm excluding any plans on completely stopping their respective antagonists because they have to succeed in some form in order to drive the story to the climatic point.
