I had the same issue with the game. It's fucking stupid, that they decided to bring up all these questions of "what if I can't fulfill my destiny" and "what if I want to be a scholar instead of a bearer of Hylia's magic" or whatever and then answered the question of fate in the most boring way possible by having Zelda just shit out her powers when it's most plot convenient.

She tried. Zelda's journal even describes a dream where Hylia was shouting for her repeated warnings, but they were mute to Zelda. Hylia is not like the omnipotent Christian God, but actually a minor one that was charged to watch over the Triforce. Think of the mythology of Zelda where the gods are like Olympians or the Shinto gods, whom are fallible and limited super humans.

Zelda needed something to trigger her powers, she had the devotion and prayer down but not the love.

Remember SS Zelda needed some time away from Link in order to focus, BotW Zelda had the opposite problem where she had all the focus but since her mother died and her dad was so harsh she didn't get the relationship support she needed.

So Link comes along and the memories are about her relationship developing with him until the last memory where we see she's willing to die to protect him. So that's exactly when her powers activate.

The death of millions is a statistic. The death of one is a tragedy. Zelda needed the tragedy to bring her power out. The death of her father wasn't enough, she had already lost her mother, and the diaries make it unlikely she cared much for him anyway. The loss of the Champions wasnt enough, she wasnt there. Link dying at her feet in the swamp was the trigger, whether it was love or rage or desperation, or all of them.

Zelda is really self absorbed in the early memories which changes as she gets to know Link better, until she loves him so much she's willing to die for him. The selfless act pushes her over the edge

They were consistently mentioned in ALttP's manual, OoT/MM, and WW. In TP they gave us the light spirits instead, but those were implied to be servants of the goddesses. Then SS decided to take a steaming pile of shit on the Zelda lore, turning Ganondorf from his own character with motivation into a boring reincarnation of malice and Link into the DESTINED HERO rather than "some kid who picked up a sword and earned the triforce by his own damn self."

Why have they abandoned the Triforce, which only becomes relevant in a cameo in the ending when Zelda uses a ball of light emblazoned with the Triforce to shoo the Calamity Ganon away? Why have they refused to mention the Goddesses by name since the GBA games/WW? Why have they replaced the more interesting and mysterious Golden Goddesses with a boring "human-like single Goddess who reincarnated for the man she loves"?

Nintendo can't think of anything cool to do with them as faceless non-characters. Everybody who plays the games or at least knows about the series knows what they are and what they did. Unless Nintendo makes them interact with the player, Nintendo will just focus on the Zelda/Hylia archetype as the mascot of the pantheon.

The fact that they really broke OoT's formula for the first time in years show me that they aren't so scared from trying new things anymore. I wouldn't necessarily want something futuristic, but really just a more industrialized version of hyrule that combines aspects from the old world with new futures. The ANCIENT SHEIKAH TECHNOLOGY stuff was cool in botw, but that's sadly as far as it went.
