They made creations they liked and there were very few places to show off that creation and let any meaningful number of people see it. Newgrounds was one of very few options (at least it was the easiest).

Not everyone creates something for some weird ulterior motive like OP implies. It just so happens that a lot of kids gravitated towards NG. NG was okay with this because revenue. NG was also the only place weirdos could upload and receive feedback on their dressup games.

It really is starting to get ridiculous. I'm supportive of artists trying to make a living off of their work online, since I know how tough it can be but shit like a letsplayer or speedrunner constantly begging for money makes me feel weird. On one hand I want to be supportive because the working world sucks ass and I'd love to break free of it but on the other hand I can't help but feel it's not sustainable and also kind of scummy. If it were just youtubers and artists it would be one thing but literally fucking everything seems to be locked behind a paywall at this point and it's maddening. Why the fuck am I expected to pay some no-name antivirus program a decent chunk of money just so it can do what it's supposed to?
