I use it with my brother to play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it's not bad surprisingly. Almost immediatly, I forgot I was using it and just had fun and that's great in my opinion.

not to mention a game where you might have to press 2 buttons at once. Honestly its not a big deal. The four button setup is small enough it functions essentially like a dpad but it'd be nice if they released a joycon with a dpad

While the pro controller is obviously better. Those buttons are actually good and perfectly serviceable as a d-pad.

If you want to talk issues with the joycons it's all about the right joycon and how the right stick is too close to the 'B' button resulting in it getting in the way all the time when trying to use the buttons. That's a legit issue and a pretty big one to boot.
But as far as the "d-pad" is concerned? It works just fine. It's a ridiculous nitpick to complain about it.
