It's not like anyone cares about my story.
But I used to be pretty great at fighting games over a decade or so ago. Won a few tournaments.
But I quickly noticed that it just made people around me tense, upset, or occasionally even angry. And my closest friends weren't even competitive on that level.

I started to compete because I loved the games. But I reached a point where I asked myself I even bothered competing. I couldn't find a good reason for it because it was honestly never that important to me. I just wanted to play the game with other interested people.
So I stopped playing competitively and have mostly played casually since. You might laugh at me or scorn me. Claim that I just quit because I didn't have what it took or whatever. But the truth of the matter is, I became happier when I quit. I never really got anything out of competing. Not even the prices were worth much when put into the perspective of the time needed to prepare.

There are always exceptions. But the top halves of competitive scenes are typically full of cut-throats, tense, and easily agitated people. People who aren't happy with their own abilities and are full of frustration because of it. People who are gloating from their otherwise respectable abilities. And people who are deathly afraid of being surpassed by the people under them. And so on, and so on. Combined with the obligatory groupies and people who just suck up to everyone else, and even then they occasionally despise the ones they suck up to anyway.

If your interest is honestly the games themselves. Then it's really not the best environment to play games. Whenever there is a tournament or whatever the most fun is always had on the side all of it by the people who aren't actually attending. Provided anyone is having fun at all.
