>Risk of Rain 2 is our first fully 3D project! We think that 3D allows for much deeper design spaces and more possibilities for cool gameplay. Feelings of scale and atmosphere are also much stronger. We are really happy with the core of Risk of Rain - and we’re finding it plays even better in 3D. It just won’t crash anymore.

We’ll be spending the next few devblogs talking about all the awesome systems we have in place (unified character system, item proc chains, etc) with future ones talking about our progress through development. I promise that we’re doing all these things because we think it’ll make the coolest game. And to all our fans - thanks for sticking with us. We hope you’re all as excited as we are.

Looks neat. I'm not entirely sure if the enemy design or art direction in general will translate well into 3D. The sprites were decently animated for how basic they were. I feel like it would lose a lot of its verticality too. It could be good, but could also be garbage.

Ok Hopoo dev, since you're shilling here again like with your first game, and you got caught using Unity I'll give you a direct answer.


It's because unity is for lazy developers with no actual knowledge in proper languages. It has severe limitations not just graphically, but design and performance which developers almost always hit late into development, when they're too far invested to back out of using it they begin damage control mode.

Not to mention its unstable as fuck, irritating for the end user. You're still early in dev, it's not too late to turn back to a real option especially considering you had EXTREME ISSUES getting your FIRST game to run at a decent FPS. What are you gonna do when you try and load a ton of enemies and Unity just shits the bed in every direction from not being able to handle that many entities to errors even placing them or spawning them? What are you going to do when it has system specific crashes like Unity always does. Probably nothing like your first game.

The only ones defending Unity ITT are indie fags or your own team, you're not fooling anyone. Feel free to say I dont knowwhat im talking about or some other damage control, I gave you a fair fucking warning now. You can ignore it or take the advice.

Anybody else sort of disappointed at this happening?
A big part of what made the original Risk of Rain for me was how the minimalist artstyle worked with the soundtrack to give off the ambience of an alien world and the mysterious nature of what is happening in the game. From what was posted in the devblog, I'm afraid the sequel might be losing these qualities, while the experience instead becomes more off-beat and action filled. Translating the original's style into 3D like that also seems to make it exceedingly cartoony in my opinion. I really feel like Risk of Rain didn't need a sequel anyway - I'm worried it won't make the transition into 3D completely intact, whereas, going by Hopoo's track record, this game could still end up pulling its weight with a new premise and an original name attached to it.

It's improved a lot since its early builds but like >>376347515 said it's still actually really bad for developers, especially if you're using it as a low end dev. It's a very limiting engine and can only handle so many assets before it shits itself making developing in it very problematic. They'll love it at first for ease of access like most lazy developers do, but when they get into the meat of it they're going to hit bad walls.

At that point it's going to become a balancing game limiting the creators original vision. Unity isnt as bad as it used to be but there are many better and less limiting options. They wont be able to fully realize their actual goals unless they have VERY low aspirations for their game.

Unity is basically a filter for lazy assholes.

Literally every Unity game I've bought and played has shit itself inside out and ruined games, especially multiplayer ones.
This is because they take Unity and do a game of any significant scope in them, like it's Unreal.

It doesn't matter if your developers are Dream Team material, Unreal wouldn't start letting shit fly like vertices detaching from their models and geometry and spazzing out all over the screen - they'd at worst start slowing down.

As an engine, Unity is best for small simple games like Clustertruck, that doesn't need to make use of a lot of custom shaders or middleware libraries.

True, but unfortunately it's also a terrible piece of software.

ROR2 is going to be ultra intensive, using Unity would mean a slowdown on, say, high settings. It would surely have to get downgraded.
Nobody is literally shilling any other engine in particular, it's just Unity that's shit. Optimization is a far, far away dream even with it.
Godot 3.0 is on the way and there's unironically an open-source Unity clone called Xenko that apparently runs better than the actual thing.
The only plus Unity has is probably the number of tutorials, but even in the documentation quality other engines smash it.

RoR was probably the only game of this whatever genre that I enjoyed along FTL, so I'm interested.
I really appreciate they're experimenting with new stuff, RoR2 in 2D would've been boring, just more of the same with some improvements but this is something completely new that can mean a lot of very interesting mechanics. I also like that the artstyle is very similar despite the transition.

I've been using Unity both as a hobby and professionally for many years and I've never encountered these problems myself to the point of fucking up the project. The engine is limited in some things, like absolutely all engines are, and in general I think people quickly blame the engine for the mistakes of the developers themselves, but it's true that I don't know how the engine will hold when it gets to those levels of insanity that the first game used to get in the last difficulty, with hundreds of enemies, missiles, turrets and all kinds of shit going on at the same time. I think 3D will fuck my main man, the Sniper. Sniper works well In 2D due to his piercing shots - that won't work as well in 3D space where enemies come from different angles.

Enforcer might get better though. Melee classes should do alright, too.
