What happened to horror games that loved to show off the monsters and let you fight them? I mean I loved the Penumbra series and I loved Amnesia for making the Horror genre somewhat relevant again but now the genre has completely changed to only be Amnesia like games.

>>
>>376331134
because it's usually not scary once you can fight back and kill them
>>
>>376332195
I disagree.
The first resident evil games were spoopy and yet you could kill shit.
It's all about how little resources you have, do i use my limited supply of bullets to kill that or conserve them for later?
Also the scarce amount of healing items and the fact that you are likely to take damage from the bosses or some of the more aggravating enemies (Hunters for example)
>>
Let me guess

It's going to have procedurally generated trenches
It'll be a rogue lite-lite lite
The big twist at the end is that there are no monsters and you just had PTSD.
>>
>>376332421
>The first resident evil games were spoopy and yet you could kill shit.
Scary because of the controls

>It's all about how little resources you have, do i use my limited supply of bullets to kill that or conserve them for later?
here I agree with you though, if inventory management is important it can be scary but in most survival horror games I always find I have more than enough ammo even oon higher difficulties

jsut find not being able to fight back a lot more scary. Seriously I love horror but I hadn't been properly spooked in years until I played Amnesia and damn near had PTSD

That blinking is annoying and I can tell it locks you into stopping to look at the sp00ky, then you just run. How fucking boring lol. Why not have a squad of ww1 soldiers think they're fighting normal troops, then things start getting more paranormal and sp00ky as the game goes on, then eventually you're shooting at big monsters or whatever and trying to escape with your life. I don't wanna just run andown hide like every other "horror" game these days. Make it interesting faggot

Aw men, this is the game that proved me that you innherently enjoy videogames or not. I found it quite enjoyable, charming and not very difficult, so I decided to show it to my sister and parents.

There's a scene, at the very beggining, where you play as Emile in his first charge against the enemy. You are the banner holder, and what starts being a triumphal attack soon turns into slaughter and madness, as bombs fall around you and enemy machine guns decimate your allies and friends. The only thing you can actually do is keep running, running towards God-knows-what, in a frenzied race that started as a glorius charge but now is nothing more than a panicked fleeing.

This scene, I found it enjoyable, and very well designed. It communicats throught gameplay facing the tragic reality of WWI.

My family didn't care at all. I don't blame them, because they didn't connect in the first place. It's truly a shame that so many people still view videogames as nothing more than entertainment, and don't give themselves the opportunity to enjoy them as a medium for great stories.
>>
The Darkness. And its one of the best games ever made.
>>
>>376340092
That sounds incredible but extremely annoying. You'll never be able to simulate the real horrors of war. Even with cutting edge graphics, motion detection, etc. you still have to suspend belief.
By doing what you've suggested, youll just give people headaches and force them to just trial by fire/suicide through the game.

Youre better off keeping the supernatural element but mixing in the brutal warfare. Keep levels long and don't let up. A day and night cycle should take place.

It wouldn't be new
it wouldn't be groundbreaking

All its going to do is force you to go through "traumatic" events and make the character freak out in hopes of pushing that onto the player.

I know calling people autist is the rutinary procedure on /v/, but I don't see the problem in showing people you love and care pieces of media you enjoy.

If I showed them, for example, Persona 5, that could be autistic, as Japanese media is far from ours, but Valiant Hearts, being a simple Western game, is something more easy to relate.

You might want discussion, so... do you still try to show your love for videogames to people who doesn't really know them? Or only to ones who already like them?

>>376342553
As much as Agincourt would have sucked, there's something horrifying about the impersonal mechanization of WWI and the sheer scale of the slaughter. Getting perforated by arrows is one thing, you can see the fucking limey who shot you a few hundred yards away, any you can stop the arrows with a shield, but watching your whole squad getting blown up in an instant by some artillery miles away, while your shitty muddy trench starts collapsing on top of you and poisonous gasses fill the air is on another level.

>>
Horror comes from a feeling of helplessness, and inability to stop what is coming. However it needs to be balanced with the illusion that you can do something to mitigate it. It's a combination of giving the player the ability to respond then showing them that their responses are meaningless. Give them small triumphs so their ability to respond doesn't feel entirely pointless, but continue forward. Make it a one step forward, two steps back scenario.

If any game truely tried to recreate WW1 and how fucked up it was that would be a horror game in of itself. all of these have enemies that kill you way fast and you lose tons of progress for doing so. That is the secret to good combat horror games. Loss of progress.

Guy playing did a pretty awful job with the camera work at times, but the sound design and overall hectic nature is what people want I guess.

Napoleonic warfare was dudes in funny hats doing group duels with muskets.
WW1 was the first combined arms conflict with no rules, it was a chaotic bloodbath with weapons low-tech enough to give you high chances of a slow painful death but efficient enough to prevent either side from gaining a decisive advantage.
You sat in a trench watching your toes rot off praying that one of the constant barrage of artillery shells doesn't land inside it, unable to sleep, seeing your mates puke their lungs out after a gas attack and crews getting burned alive in tanks with raptured fuel lines, hearing the screams of the dying that you can't get to, waiting for that whistle to send you running straight into machine gun fire and grenades.

>Anon don't you know? Horror games nowadays don't NEED deep and involving gameplay. Just make the bad guy scary looking, include some basic line-of-sight stealth and boom, you're good to go. That'll keep you interested for three or so hours. $20, please.

Fuck these games. Fuck Outlast 1 and 2 and fuck the indie games that copy it. The horror is gone after the first playthrough and all your left with is a piss-poor stealth game.

If the -only- way you can make a horror game scary is by forcefully out of your way disempowering the player, or starving them of resources.

It's a fucking garbage horror game IMO.

I really liked Dead Space as far as horror went.

And the old Resident Evils, Code Veronica was the last one I really liked.

People seem to expect too much from horror games. My gross outs are usually body horror of some sort, any sort of "BioPunk" type of shit.

And demon shit, ala dante's inferno or even something like the hell realms in Constantine.

I ain't expecting magical shit.
But I don't believe a person in a life threatening situation, who isn't just going to die almost immediately anyway. Is going to empower themselves (Isaac Clarke) or going to fight back once they find their "tools" so to speak.

Shit like Amnesia & Outlast are garbage to me personally & respectively.

I remember hearing about this 'legend'. In some letter that an British soldier wrote, he talks about seeing a creature in the german trenches at night. Seeing the creature tearing men apart at the dead of night and hearing the Germans scream. I remember hearing it on some podcast called last podcast on the left.

Dead Space stopped being scary after the first level, once they started throwing the monsters at you constantly and in well lit areas the game went full on action.

>2 original 4 u "spoopy" """"""""horror""""""" stands up

Yeah, this. Few too many played Silent Hill and watched the documentaries and thought that now that they are "educated" they automatically have what it takes to design horror creatures. So where before they would literally put a fucking skellington) they instead put something vaguely weird, probably elongated limbs or an uneven amount of them (limbs). Limbs in any case, limbs are scary, right? But anyway, since they are fucking morons, they still trip over every other cliche and fail to achieve immersion which is the most important thing about horror in the first place. If you can't make me scared or at least interested before I see your spoopy limb centipede, you're done bro. But I mean sure, go right ahead and see your project through, there's plenty of streamers/youtubers/poopoopers waiting in line to scream at your game.

Love the ease in/out camerawork here, it's straight out of a sunday cartoon.

Fuck horror in general, such a cheap fucking genre. So fucking primitive too. Imagine if the point of drama was to make you cry and the content was solely just people crying with the expectation that you will join along. That's the mental/intellectual level "horror" operates on.
