Honestly, the GBA and its hardware had reached its maximum capability long ago. Coupled with that the DS was just too good, too beloved by reviewers, consumers and developers alike, any actual GBA successor was doomed from the start. The DS was built too different to be a proper GB successor, which unironically, made it one of the best successor to date since it was a breath of fresh air to handheld.
