The 'world' in WoW isn't entirely canon either, oddly enough. It's a really really scaled-down version of the world for gameplay reasons.

Stormwind and Goldshire are, in the lore, about a day's ride apart, with various smaller villages and farmsteads all around. Likewise, the entire world isn't actually split into geographic and climate isolated puzzle-piece zones with mountain ranges everywhere blocking everything, that's just to facilitate MMO leveling mechanics.

An actual, geographically correct lore-canon representation of Azeroth would probably be way too large to fit into a game at this point.

We have sandbox games like space engine giving us so much room to play it would take literally hundreds of years in real time to fully explore it at base game speeds.

We need to think bigger. That's the Azeroth I want to play. Its the only way to revive the MMO genre. It needs to be bigger, much bigger.

with appropriate survival mechanics and travel means of course. If there is a problem, like long travel time on foot, you should be able to solve it. i.e Get a horse etc

>>376326248
All Warcraft 4 can be now is a spin-off RTS with a side story ripped from a WoW expansion, WoW is the main Warcraft franchise now.
>>
>>376326248
The non linearity and pointless upgrades ruin RTS campaigns. Instead of having a set of tools that you give a player and making them play around it you have to balance in such a way that no build is underpowered, hence the only way you can make the gameplay is just mish-mashing of unit blobs ala SC2. Good RTS can make a fun and difficult mission with only a small fraction of the tech tree (See: Stronghold).
>>
>>376312435
How can they be paid less? Ithought VA union took care of it.
>>
>>376325087
To be precise, the nobles refused to pay them and the Defias went apeshit over it until Varian didn't break the royal piggy-bank...that is also until a whole lot of misunderstandings happened and they turned criminal. And their leader was hellbent on razing Stormwind.

>>376326448
With what WoW has become, there will never be an RTS. They'd have to retcon WoW into an alternative timeline because the 100 tetratons of bullshit that accumulated over time makes it utterly impossible to make a new RTS in this franchise.

>>376326479
Dunno. Stronghold is different here from WarCraft and StarCraft in many ways.

If there are some things I like about SCII is that it had mechanically fun campaign missions (despite the rage-inducing plots) and equally fun upgrades and units available in the campaign.

>Stronghold is different here from WarCraft and StarCraft in many ways.
Not really, most people on /v/ just built castles on easy mode but playing its campaigns or missions on hard or very hard makes it into one of the best RTS out there. Most missions are limited by time (either do something in X, or survive for X, with some other forms of missions that usually have ways to keep things difficult, and a few easy missions) but the main thing that makes it so good is the amount of options and strategies you can do with limited tech.

When playing a map, the things you have to worry a lot about are. after figuring out the layout of the entire map and what to do with it

>Positioning of every single building
>Income of multiple types of resources
>Keepping track of several statistics
>Building and microing buildings
>Finding out what the best defensive positions are
>While fighting, keep doing the above but also move units around as needed (eg spearman to walls, tank units to broken walls,

And do all this in what are usually very limited amounts of time, so when you fail you have many many ways to look back on your mistakes and find out what to focus on, what the problem was and so on. Starting to make weapons on time in a certain mission while barely scraping by on food or whatever is often times necessary. The flaws can be obvious strategy issues, figuring out what tactic to trade out for what, and of course doing it on time. Because of the systems of the game, including things like terrain, it feels great to play.

In most other RTS' you generally just put some workers to work, make an army so the focus is on:

>IIII
>>
>>376328398

>Do the initial set of Macro tactics
>Scout/Get info
>Move units
>Micro units
>Make more units

Its a very simple loop, so when you fail its usually because you lost a battle where your army was just a little too small to snowball the rest of the map, or because you did not manage to react to a single attack on time. Its very sad that the original stronghold is the only game to get this right. Sure you can extend the way these works, however Stronghold has them to a good degree as well, and it has a lot of base mechanics which allow all of these things to function in many different ways (eg, archers get more range when firing from higher areas, they have different patters of precision based on location to and from which they fire on). There's also the fact that building space is far more important in stronghold than any other RTS that I've played.
>>376328557
I know that feel lad, I've restarted that mission around 30 times. Shame that the last mission of the game sucked, as it makes it out as being an epic battle but the size of the siege is smaller than the first pig invasion.

The missions between those two, however, are BRUTAL. One is a TINY TINY map where you fight against massive forces of the wolf, and another is a very open area, where you have a limited safe area, and constant MASSIVE amounts of the wolfs units invading very quickly. Its a mission you can only just barely beat.
