I prefer the current VAs with better voice direction.

That really is the only problem with the voice acting in the current games. In Boom they're much better, but in the games they have shitty writing and direction to deal with. The variety of roles that most of them have done in the past is evidence enough that they can probably voice the characters however they're told to. So for example with Shadow, Kirk Thornton voices him like a generic smoldering douchebag because that's how Sega wants him to be portrayed as. But if they wanted to portray Shadow as a serious but otherwise heroic foil to Sonic, Thornton could probably voice him that way too.
