What are some JRPGs more simlar to Pokemon?
I'm not really a fan of the 4 character party trope in most JRPGs, I like the 1v1 style of Pokemon a lot more, even though Pokemon occasionally has 2v2 battles.
But yeah, every JRPG I've played has you on a party of 4, all fighting at the same time, and multiple enemies. Where did this trope even start? Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy? Or is it a callback to the parties of D&D?

200% Mixed Juice and Ni no Kuni are kinda like it. Too bad they're both shit in incredibly different ways.

First Dragon Warrior has no party members.

Goes further back than that, lots of old legends usually have stories about 4 heroes doing xyz. As for one on one battles, it's pretty rare. Ever play an SRPG? it's sort of similar, you control an army but the "battles" are 1v1 most of the time, just over multiple characters
