A friend watched me play Dark Souls way back, saw me using a fireball pyromancy and unironically went "oh, so it has a fireball just like Skyrim".

Dark Souls was the perfect opportunity to IGN and Destructoid to label themselves as "hardcore" because they praised the game
That meant the normie audience went to play Dark Souls and some began following the series/lore

Thankfully most westen gamers went back to Uncharted and Last of Us but on youtube you'll still find clickbait videos about Dark Souls made by people who don't even like the series.

The dark souls series gave me something I didn't even realize I wanted.
Another arpg with the low fantasy feeling and same sort of atmosphere the original Diablo game had.
Y'know, before all the screen filling magic spells, ridiculous giant pauldrons, unwieldy, overdesigned weapons and magical floating rock tiaras orbiting your head.

That said, I will forever cringe whenever I see "X is the DARK SOULS of Y genre" bullshit. The casual audience and the "PREPARE TO DIE" marketing campaign did nothing positive to the overall fanbase.
