Season 1+2 were the initial phase and the Simpsons tried to find its own pace of humour. These seasons were the most realistic and depressing ones, but they also have funny bits. Theyre worth watching.

Seasons 3-8 are the "golden age" of the Simpsons. Great plot, jokes, endless amounts of quotes that everyone remembers and loving characters. The writers really put their back into these seasons and it shows.

Season 9-11 is where it started to go downhill. I'd say half of these episodes are on par with the golden age seasons, but there are a lot of bad episodes too.

Season 11-13 is were the writers got obsessed with guest appearences of Hollywood stars, musicians, politicians etc. The writers were also shifting their political views from centrist to leftist and it shows (pandering to liberals etc.).

Season 14+ is cancer. Dont watch.

I recently watched all the newer Comedy Central seasons on Netflix and I thought they were really good. Not quite as good as the original four seasons, but still very good in their own way; humor was great, a handful of hard hitting quality episodes that advanced the overall story forward. I think they did the right thing by cancelling it before it dragged out for too long and became stale.

Revived Futurama was pretty garbage. Edgy jokes for the sake of showing off the fact they're on cable. Big Bang Theory style "science" jokes aimed at college freshmen instead of the subtle ones they used to have. Rehashing and dragging out characters and jokes not out of genuine inspiration, but because they really want to pander to fan favorites (Scruffy is the worst culprit).

I think the writers, basically Willis and Maiellaro, knew the series had run its course and wanted to lay it to rest properly but CN kept insisting they make new episodes. You can tell towards the last few seasons they gave up and intentionally starting doing stupid shit that was even beyond ATHF's standards to illustrate their annoyance with having to keep making episodes. They even renamed it a couple of times (Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1 and Aqua Something You Know Whatever) to show they clearly didn't give a fuck anymore.

Classic South Park is genuinely great and can stand on it's own, even with the edginess and topicalness gone. The recent stuff is bad (although I think they turned it around with the PC principle season) is because it just feels like they are just going through the motions. If it wasn't just "let's just shit something out about something in the news last week", it was taking one joke and literally stretching out through the whole episode (like the one where Randy buys a blockbuster, or the sueance episode). Which is why I think the season long story arc turned out so well since it felt like they were inspired and excited to be writing for once.
