There are different kinds of magic, you can basically call Triss the muscles and Yenn the brain. Triss can fuck shit up, Yenn has more tricks up her sleeve, such as forbidden magic, like necromancy.

Megascope is just a videochat, a magic that connects one place with another. About what you can do with this, its up to the sorceress imagination and limitations. Example, Triss cant make portals, but found an alternate solution that works for her, a megascope.

Completely forgot about the teleport stuff, but magic works the same way it does in European folklore. There are locations/ways to amplify your magic, and ways to weaken it. Novigrad obviously had some kind of dampening effect going on thanks to the witch-hunters, but I'm not sure about Yennefer teleporting hundreds of miles under her own power, either Vizima is one of those strong places or she had some kind of help through either other sorcerers or equipment.

I feel like only the high-end sorceresses can create portals. Triss could easily fuck-off from Novigrad but it would leave the weaker mages behind. The only sorceresses who were invited to join the Lodge were legitimately the most powerful - they weren't all advisors to kings without good reason.

Even if Triss seems like a shit, she's the weakest of a group of the most powerful mages in the world. Not all mages showed up to Thanned; all who did were the very best.

I figure the sorcerers all have specializations. Some study, some teach, some research, some maintain wards and anti-magic fields, others blow shit up. It's just that the ones we see in action are capable of extreme violence.

Nilfgaard for example probably doesn't have many combat mages because mages there are treated like shit and Nilfgaard got its shit wrecked at Sodden Hill and the only way they were able to neutralize the mages of the Northern Kingdoms was not through magical combat but to cause the schism at Thanned.

Yen in particular is probably retarded powerful - the Lodge really only invites her because of how badass she is - because she's otherwise a completely uncooperative asshole that nobody wants around. She amps her power with her necklace and even without it she resists Vilgefortz to some degree. Triss didn't know how to handle Ciri at Kaer Morhen - she had to send for Yen.

Triss too, is trained to wreck shit. She was sent as part of a commando unit to blow up Vilgefortz's castle.
