I often think about this, does DaS deserve it for being the true point of mainstream breakthrough or does DeS deserve it for coming first and basically codifying almost everything in DaS.

As a game, DaS was more influential because when people copy the 'souls formula' they are not copying DeS, they're copying DaS. That said, the importance of DeS cannot be overstated and being directly influential is not the be all and end all of a legacy.

Team Fortress 2. It started the whole hero shooter fad. But yeah, it's probably Souls all around. Other than just straight up getting clones, a shitload of devs say Souls inspired them in some way.

Minimal storytelling is more prevalent now than it has been in years, the Eye Stone/soapstone mechanics had been done before but after Demon's Souls it seemed to explode as developers seemed to start thinking of new ways to tackle co-op and PvP, games outside the DMC-sphere of games seem to be incorporating more aspects of dodging, blocking, and emphasis on patience, timed gameplay rather than button mashing (seriously so many "action games" for the PS2 were just button mashers), and more emphasis on fulfilling, intelligent set design rather than linear corridors with views of places you'd want to go explore but can't (though this is something that probably hasn't changed all that much now).

Question about MOBAs from someone who sits as far away in the room from MOBAs as can be helped: what game really set off the popular MOBA fad? LoL comes to mind but I don't know enough about the genre to say.

Tons of games have featured cheap approximations of SotC's climbing on large enemies, but I haven't seen anything copy the way that SotC did i,t with extensive use of inverse kinematics, physics, deforming collision systems, etc. that make it feel like you're actually climbing on some big moving creature, rather than just playing a climbing section that happens to be on a big creature.

Reminds me a bit of how Super Mario 64 is hugely popular and influential, but somehow it seems like no one has really tried copying its acrobatic platforming.
