The reason why the show has been on far longer then any other monster catching show is because it follows a strict formula. Ash, Pikachu, and Team Rocket are the anchors that keep the show from straying too far from what it's supposed to be. No matter how different the region is, they will always be there, and it's that level of consistency that will bring in newcomers while keeping nostalgic former fans from being alienated.

Why do you think, after all these years, both Yu-Gi-Oh and Digimon ended up going back to the original protagonists? In Yugi's case, twice even.
