>if you're out of lives, no matter how far into the game, you go back to Green Hill Zone

Who's the retard who thought this was a good idea
>>
How do you die in Sonic the Hedgehog?

The game's health mechanic makes it nearly impossible to die and there's only 2 or 3 levels with instant death pitfalls.
>>
>>376163813
It's a relic of the arcade systems. Sega was born and died from the arcade. So, yeah.
>>
>>376163813
Then what should happen when you run out of lives according to you? Plenty of games from the 8bit and 16bit era did this.

>>
>>376163813
You don't. There's continues.

Not that you would know, not having actually played the game.
>>
>>376163813
Most (good) games from that era were designed to ease you into the mechanics of the game as you advanced, teaching you how the game worked as you played and testing what you've learned later on.

If you sucked so much you completely ran out of lives, the game sent you back to the beginning as a way of saying, "You didn't learn shit. Start over and pay attention this time." It's no wonder today's entitled ADHD gamer can't comprehend games without automatic checkpoints or no fail states.
>>
>>376163813
There are continues but you got to earn them, you fucking cry-baby.
>>
Sonic 1 hands out lives and continues like candy.

if you managed to get to a game over screen and unable to continue then I don't know how you managed to stay in this hobby for this long.

Marble Zone is just a pain in the ass tho.
>>
>>376164258
Marble Zone is unironically my favorite Sonic zone.

I Hated the water level with a passion and use to rage and throw a fit even back then.

Act 1 is like that as well, you just got really really good after playing enough times. I went back to Sonic 1 after years of not playing, and let me tell you, Act 1 is brutal as well. It only became relatively tame after I committed it to muscle memory and played Sanic nonstop.

Act 1 is absolutely not brutal in any shape or form. It's the only stage in the entire game that actually demands you to platform, and that's hardly a challenge. The only time you'd see trouble is if you're an idiot and take the lower paths, and even then those sections can be cleared if you have a bit of patience and don't just hold right on the d-pad.

The only thing you're telling me is that you're fucking terrible at a basic platformer. SMB3 tossed more shit at you than any Sonic game is capable of doing.

Continues act as a lesser punishment and a second chance but you start at act one of whatever zone you where on if you run out of continues the punshment is then starting over again completely its all part of the game

I had to boot up the game. I went down that slope, held down and not up, and guess what happened? I didn't even make it to the loop, the instant the slope ended I stopped dead in my track ducking instead of my momentum even bringing me to that loop.

The other times he almost gets a quarter way up the loop but then suddenly stops, stands up for a split second, then turns left while all I am doing is holding down letting the ball form build up momentum on a downward slope.

It is serviceable and better than Sonic 4, but it still doesn't control properly.

Stop going into an autistic frenzy. He is right for pointing out that continues and lives start you at certain points. There is a difference in having one more life to start at Act 3 and using a continue to start again when you die at Act 3. There is still a chance in which they expend their lives before even getting to the point they previously got a game over at.
>>
>>376163907

Marble Zone, Labyrinth Zone and Scrap Brain Zone Act 3 are objectively tedious and poorly designed zones. Anyone who isn't blinded by nostalgia or has a raging boner for the classics can see this. It doesn't mean that the rest of the zones/acts aren't fun or that the mechanics aren't great or whatever.
>>
>>376171197
You mean some of the best.
>>
>>376171197
I agree with Marble Zone and Act 3 SBZ purely because it doesn't fit with acts 1 and 2 but I think labyrinth is a nice change of pace and a unique zone that adds to the game

Marble zone is too traditional a level for a sonic game and it just doesn't really work with sonic's gameplay

Labyrinth and Scrap Brain are fine (probably I don't remember that one so well but I don't ever remember a clear issue with it), but Marble Zone is a little too focused on standard platforming. It's not a very long level though altogether. Labyrinth still has plenty of ways to use momentum and keep going, the water just adds a different element.

Its not stop trying to make playing games seem morr nobal you are inyl doing it for your own insecurities that YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE
>>
>Never touched a Sonic game
>Only really know of the weird memes
>Loving the Twitter account and enjoying the fuck out of the cartoon
>Actually excited about Mania
How the fuck did they do it? I never once cared about Sonic and now I am actually interested in the newest game coming out.
Forces look like a piece of shit and have no care for it.

Not that I know of, but I really wish there was. Adding Sonic Advance 2's full trick system and acceleration into 3 for all team combinations would make that game so much better I feel. Tricks in Sonic Advance 1 would probably be great too. Fuck it, put 2's tricks in everything I love that game.

I forget, is Act 2 just the "Labyrinth" area of Scrap Brain?

Cause if you're fast enough you can skip like 2/3rds of that part of the level

Play Sonic 1-3 & Knuckles then, Mania is going to be more of that but expanded upon.

>I forget, is Act 2 just the "Labyrinth" area of Scrap Brain?
No, that's Act 3, Act 2 is the inside of Scrap Brain with those wheel things you go on & transporters you go through very fast, it also has a lot of buzz saws.

Oh right, I should mention Sonic 2 & 3 are better games to represent the positives of those series of games. I love me Sonic 1 but the level design isn't as good and there's no spindash which a lot like.
>>
>>376175516
>>376175990
I guess I'll try out 2 first. How annoying is it getting the chaos emerald in single player?
>>
>>376175990
>and there's no spindash
Not unless you play the Taxman remake (the definitive version)
>>
>>376176091
Pro tip, play Sonic 2 as Sonic alone, because Tails makes the Special Stages next to impossible.

Cartoon agrees
>>
>>376176091
Sonic 2 can be a bitch in my opinion if you have Tails tagged along, if you're Sonic alone then the Ring requirement is lowered making it easier. Sonic 3 & Knuckles are easier and more fun in my opinion.

>>376176139
True, same goes for the 3DS version and Sonic Jam version. Is there an easy way to play those the Taxman version on a computer? I'm still peeved they never released those remakes on Steam.
>>
Who here replaying all the sonic games they have as they wait for Mania?
>>
>>376176212
I may not be remembering correctly but doesn't Tails only lose his own rings in those stages? Since he runs behind you he collects shit you miss so even if he only gets a single ring he's made it that much easier.
>>
>>376174481
if your writing books or making games it became more than a hobby
>>
>>376176446
Isn't there an Android emulator for PC? Try that I guess.
>>
>>376176702
The required ring total is a lot higher if you're playing as Sonic and Tails together, meaning that Tails losing his rings is a major problem.
>>
>>376163813
You didn't "go back to green hill zone", you fucking lost because you suck and got what you deserved.
>>
>>376174005
I feel like the screen is too close in the handheld sonic games
>>
>>376176982
I just checked and on the first stage it lowered the ring requirement by 10 on the first checkpoint and didn't scale back any further so you ended with 130 and 140. I wouldn't call that a lot higher, Tails ended up picking up 11 rings for me but I had 180 something total. My Sonic only run I had 174 at the end.

I usually play as Sonic+Tails and I only ever really had issues with the Watermelon colored stage where the rings are scattered about everywhere so there's no clear lines and the best strategy I could come up with as a kid was to do loops. As long as you don't rely on Tails it's not much harder and on most stages he'll even get some rings to help out.

>>
>>376178241
Admittedly I haven't played Sonic+Tails in 2 for many years, but I can definitely tell you that I have a way fucking easier time in the Special Stages as Sonic alone.
>>
>>376163813
With arcades it was a way to get more quarters, with early console games it was a way to extend the playtime of short games so players felt like they got their money's worth. Call me casual but I'm glad the lives system has fallen out of favor. There are other better ways to do difficulty.
>>
>>376178591
Such as?
Not complaining, just want to know
>>
>>376175990
I honestly like Sonic 1's lack of spin dash. It makes holding onto your momentum more important, so it feels more rewarding when you do. I understand why I'm in the minority there, though.

Yeah, that definitely got introduced in Chemical Plant, and the TV bouncing could be done in Casino Night and Oil Ocean if I'm right.
