I'm almost certain they said they'd give everyone a fair warning ahead of time and remove the...what's it called? The Steam lock? From the game files so everyone could back them up and still play them.

And if that turned out to be a load of horseshit I'd just pirate everything in my library.

Steam won't "shut down," it's far too valuable as a datamining tool. If Valve ever goes under, Steam would probably be bought by Amazon or Facebook almost immediately.

Valve has changed their end user agreement or whatever plenty of times, what you pay for their service now is a subscription and I doubt that they are in any way obligated to give you your games if they cease operations.

Outside of AAA games, most steam games dont need steam to run. Try running a game from the steam folder with steam not running. If it runs but doesn't start steam it's a good game

I honestly think if that happens we might finally get some reform with consumer protections with digital products.

Can you show me somewhere on the Steam terms when you publish a game saying that if "steam goes down, every game will be 'unlocked'" or something?

What's more likely in the future is that you'll have to re-sign a new ToS agreement and your account will be migrated over to a new system. Which may include a small fee.

If you don't like the new system? Tough.
If some of the games on your list disappear during migration? Talk to our tech support robots.
Some of the publishers don't agree to the migration? Hope they don't like selling their game.

That's the sad fact of the matter, is that as the gatekeeper Valve holds all the cards. If there ever comes an event where their company is about to go under, then they wouldn't give a fuck about accruing lawsuits for a company that is doomed anyway.

Of course, Steam could be just Steam Greenlight and that would keep Valve aloft for 100 years. So there's no need to worry.
