If Steam shuts down and/or Valve goes out of business then what happens to all the games you bought?

Do you get physical copies sent to your address as compensation?

Certainty the end result wouldn't be you losing all your games and having to watch hundreds if not thousands of dollars be flushed down the toilet in the blink of an eye....
>>
I'm almost certain they said they'd give everyone a fair warning ahead of time and remove the...what's it called? The Steam lock? From the game files so everyone could back them up and still play them.

And if that turned out to be a load of horseshit I'd just pirate everything in my library.

you lose them forever. you agreed to that when using steam service.

>buy cd-rom game
>it breaks while spinning in your cd-drive bc it had that gnarly crack in the center of the cd
>muh lost dollas
>muh flushed shit in blink of an eye
>where's my compensation REEEEEE
>>
>>376153872
wow what a blatant lie. Valve said themselves that they would remove DRM and allow you to back up your games.

Someone remind me how much Valve makes in a month? Why the fuck would they shut down when they're onto the mother of all money-makers?

MFW that feels like more of a reality.

Steam won't "shut down," it's far too valuable as a datamining tool. If Valve ever goes under, Steam would probably be bought by Amazon or Facebook almost immediately.
>>
>>376153305
>remove the...what's it called? The Steam lock?
And you think EVERY GAME PUBLISHER will have agreed with this?
Basically leaving their game pirated with no protection whatsoever?

TPB, like everyone.

Valve has changed their end user agreement or whatever plenty of times, what you pay for their service now is a subscription and I doubt that they are in any way obligated to give you your games if they cease operations.

I figure same thing as being offline, all online games will die, but all single player games will be fine
>>
>>376152928
Outside of AAA games, most steam games dont need steam to run. Try running a game from the steam folder with steam not running. If it runs but doesn't start steam it's a good game
>>
>>376156110
let us know when it happens

I honestly think if that happens we might finally get some reform with consumer protections with digital products.

Millions of people would be out thousands of dollars instantly, it would be fucking chaos. As much as out lawmakers are corporate whores that's the exact sort of situations where consumer protections have come about in the past.

thats not a good way to archive things unless you are made out of money
>>
>>376158675
Some very quick checks indicate it grosses over $70m a month, has a value of $2-4b and controls between 50-70% of the PC digital market.

That is not a company that is going to die through anything short of divine intervention!

I don't know if they make that much though, I mean, shit, that's a lot of fucking money, there has to be a catch.

In a cataclysmic event when steam shuts down I'll probably have bigger worries.

1. You are completely fucked if Steam goes down. It's really the undeniable reality of it all.

2. Steam isn't going down ever in any foreseeable future and that's why we're all comfortable running with the first lie.

They already did. If they didn't, their game wouldn't be on Steam.

Lol because a bunch of retarded gooks with babbys first nuke make threats? Only way n Korea is hitting WA with a nuke is if trump wants them to, now that is more likely
>>

>They already did. If they didn't, their game wouldn't be on Steam.
Can you show me somewhere on the Steam terms when you publish a game saying that if "steam goes down, every game will be 'unlocked'" or something?
>>
What's more likely in the future is that you'll have to re-sign a new ToS agreement and your account will be migrated over to a new system. Which may include a small fee.

If you don't like the new system? Tough.
If some of the games on your list disappear during migration? Talk to our tech support robots.
Some of the publishers don't agree to the migration? Hope they don't like selling their game.

That's the sad fact of the matter, is that as the gatekeeper Valve holds all the cards. If there ever comes an event where their company is about to go under, then they wouldn't give a fuck about accruing lawsuits for a company that is doomed anyway.

Of course, Steam could be just Steam Greenlight and that would keep Valve aloft for 100 years. So there's no need to worry.
