If aliens invaded Earth what would be the most realistic scenario, XCOM or EDF?

Neither.

Agreed. If a spacefaring species had the ability to reach earth, they would also be capable of utterly decimating us if we were to go to war with them.

its probably more like MIB

XCOM assumes they want our infastructure.
EDF doesn't.

It's already happened. Jews are aliens.
They are advanced enough that they have a moral code which doesn't let them just wipe us out, but they want our resources. So they infiltrate and buy up companies and buy themselves into power. All while exporting all the worthwhile resources of Earth (no, it's not gold or metals. It's water).

Why do you think Netherlands is still not underwater after a hundred years of global warming and the poles melting constantly? Why do you think the sea level is not rising? The alien jews have been stealing our water for generations.
>>
>>376120995
I don't think that HAS to be true. I definitely think if they spebt even two seconds watching us a non-warlike sentient species would nope right the fuck out. "Yo are you seeing this ZAAGXAKAZZAG? There's radiation everywhere... I think these guys have been splitting atoms on each other."

"What the fuck? We're not landing they're all insane."

More likely scenario:
Look at how fast they multiply. Look at how much destruction they can do with primitive weapons. Imagine if they learn FTL and come to us. Better hurl an asteroid at them before they get too strong.
>>
>>376121359
Encountering a new civilisation amongst the stars will be such a rarity that they will definitely interact with us, assuming they are out there and know that we exist, and can actually make the voyage. If they are benevolent they will seek to educate us, if they are warlike we will be enslaved. The point is that either way we get fucked by interacting with aliens unless they hold back. Every option is shit. We aren't ready, and I hope if there is a greater intergalactic community we enter it on our own terms.

Yes and likewise we have no other sentient tool-making species to compare to but chimps. Compared to them we're pretty fucking destructive. And of course I'm harping on our limitless curiosity. I don't know, that sounds neat. What if you can ever earn a chance to join their side proper if you are a good soldier?
>>
>>376121096
There's actually a possibility of this being true.

Complex ecosystems require a variety of elements and advanced technology (including spaceflight) require some very heavy elements that are far along the periodic table. Not to mention an iron core creating a magnetic field is a huge advantage in developing life.
These elements are made in stars through fusion so basically the younger the galaxy, the fewer heavy elements ergo the harder life is and the harder technology is. The older the galaxy the more likely life is.
Our solar system and sun turn out to have quite an abundance of heavy elements and despite life on Earth being quite old and despite us existing, we're statistically unlikely.

This is all based upon scientists looking at the chemical compositions of neighbouring stars and then making estimates, so of course if the estimates are off then the conclusions are way off.

Another thing is that Earth is pretty close to being as large a planet can be before you start finding it impossible to achieve escape velocity using chemical rocket engines. Our planet is in a narrow band of habitability where it's massive and thus retains it's atmosphere very well, but not so massive that we'll need super duper magic technology to get into space.
>>
>>376121995
Its a potential one but I wouldn't hold your breath.
Its just like concepts like god.

The untouchable doesn't factor on our world. If someone had faint readings or research that displayed something potentially like that though it would be fascinating but as is..

The truth is that faster than light travel is a universal impossibility and all advanced species begin to reproduce slower, live within their means, develop digital existence and their solar system has far more resources than they will ever need. It is also a prison.

Also they all stop communicating with radio waves very quickly.

We will never meet them and we are unlikely to ever detect them.

>>
>>376122121
Being a thrall species is genuinely the best option for humanity.

If by comparison we are indeed warlike, it'd honestly be the best place for us considering it would fit well. Humans are surprisingly good at adaptation, for all we know we're the best equivalent to self aware cockroaches and would be perfect for starting colonization/invading planets.

Alternatively, if we're just less advanced but on the same track as the invading species, we could learn from them in a position of care and the guarantee that we were relatively safe from everything else, until we're ready to ascend to their level.

Thrall is the way to go.

Neither, though all out war like EDF is closer. The difference is we'd never stand a chance, they don't have to be very advanced, just being advanced enough to have spaceships means they can knock out all our satellites while having massive intel capabilities everywhere on the planet. Then they'd just proceed to orbitally bombard anything they don't like.

Even without orbital bombardments, and disregarding technological difference, fighting an enemy that has full satellite coverage and we have none won't end well at all.

Your average human and the whims and desires on a small scale would probably mean nothing to an alien species.

You as a person would probably be left alone mostly, they would take a supervisory role to politics but really if they're that advanced I have a hard time seeing them care about what humans do so long as you do your job.

If we are the bogeymen of space however, they'd probably want to uplift is specifically as a military force and I can't see any real bad from that. Most societies treat their armed forces fairly well and they're given a lot of respect. If we transformed into a full war economy on behalf of some aliens we'd probably do great.

how we do things that are alien to them, and they do things alien to us

They'd simply shoot them down, or hit the silos before they even launch. Moving ships would be very hard to hit unless they are in low orbit, and nukes really don't do terribly much against armoured targets unless it's a close hit. Once a silo has fired a nuke, its position is obvious and won't be firing any more unless they are fired very quickly before it can get hit. Our whole nuclear war doctrine relies on +-30 minutes of flight time before a hit, enemies in orbit could hit in under a minute, meaning we'd never even get the vast majority of our arsenal out of the silos. Even subs wouldn't have the time to move after firing to avoid counter fire.
>>
There is a 97% chance that they wouldn't even be in the visible color spectrum, making them completely invisible.
There is a high chance that they are already on Earth. Hell, there is a very high chance that there are multiple alien civilizations active on Earth right now, possibly as many as a hundred, we just can't see each other.

There are mutiple tiers of civilization
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kardashev_scale

a Tier 1 civilization is where we are
At tier 2 we are building a dyson ball around the sun

It is technically possible for us to go to war with a tier two civilization but it'd depend on who's defense

if its us they simply wouldn't have the resources to send such a large army to our planet and it'd be closer to UFO defense where a single base HQ on Mars operating against the entire earth

At Tier 3 civilization, this no longer applies as they have GALAXY wide power systems and could send fleets beyond our imagine

The reason why we can't(and presumbly everyone can't) have FTL because it breaks the laws of thermodynamics
Even with einstien's work you'd have to seriously stretch, If we discovered that we are not in a closed system that means we can create matter and entropy isn't as big as it is now

That said, IF we are in an open system that would completely change how our science works, Fundamentally change every we know from basic physics to biology, etc

Aliens(including us) would have to develop either two methods for long term space travel
Immortality or some wormhole fuckery
First is obvious, If you can live to be 150,000 years old a 20 year space trip is nothing
Second if it takes you hundreds of years to resupply an army you will probably lose, cutting out this by 80% would GREATLY increase the speeds of your army

Annihilating us will be easy for them. The bigger question is whether they want at least some of us and our stuff intact.

Most realistic scenario incoming
>space faring aliens find earth
>space is nearly limitless, so there isn't much need to conquer a planet with living beings to get any resources
>this means any reasons for war are social or political or a perceived threat to themselves, until a space faring society gets so large that it has to expand into other society's territory for more resources (This should take a long time for any space faring species, due to Space's massive size and the massive amount of resources. You've long since hit the AI singularity at this point).

In this case, the tech would be so far ahead of our own that if they wanted the minerals from earth, after cleaning the rest of our solar system out, they'd just drop rods from god on us. If they wanted water, they could probably still find a way to bombard us from orbit.

Either way, we don't have anti-orbital bombardment weaponry, and we can't even keep track of the entirety of our sky.

No one would ever run soldiers and tanks on the usa or rusia because the nuclear response would destroy the attacking country.

So if an alien civilisation is able to harness powers way above the nuclear ones we have for interstellar travel why in the fuck would they shoot at us with conventional guns how can people be so stupid as to not understand that it would be either complete destruction if they just want to destroy us or bad negotiations because they hold all the cards.

Space is limitless but planets capable of housing life are extremely rare as far as we know. But you're not wrong. They'd have to be pretty monstrous to purge an entire race just to live on their rock and frankly an FTL civilization would have evolved passed the need for war

No, Laws are not to be broken
Theories are

Laws explain how things operate while theories are why

We can change the why but never have we EVER changed a law because it has been broken

If you were to break a law of physics we'd go from apes on a planet to interdimensional gods in a proverbial blink of an eye

There are no shortcuts or free lunches, Aliens have to play by the same rules as we do

If our laws of physics are broken we'd quickly catch up to any species out there as we'd be able to make things that rival universes in terms of power(Which at that point make invading aliens moot)

Black holes are not a law of physics problem but relativity problem
They operate with light in very strange ways, deal with matter in strange ways and spit out all kinds of weird shit

I wonder how society would develop in presence of another species they could produce sterile offspring with (like horse and donkey mating with eachother results in a mule).
>>
>>376126064
Not very simple.
Sure, we'd make it work, but to understand it?

Several breakthroughs in mathematics and physics should be made. Which would promptly fuck up chemistry, biology, geology, medicine, and every single science's shit up.

Basically the knowledge that a FTL system exists would mean that we have to rework our entire conception of the universe.

Pretty god damn hard

Planets capable of housing life in the way we know of are very rare. But then we get back to the scale of just our galaxy. Even a really rare thing like Earth will still have many similar planets. And with tech so far out, isolated planetary colonies or terraforming is a distinct possibility. Which increases real estate. Then you've also got space colonies.

And yes, they'd have to be /pol/ tier levels of monsters to justify killing off an entire species just to get one more planet.

Space has so many resources that there isn't even a reason, politically, to continue the current systems we have. We'd be dealing with post scarcity political systems, which are a whole different ball game.

If I can use current political systems to describe what I think would happen to human kind (nevermind another species) in space, I'd say we'd end up with fully automated luxury communism, or socialism with private property and a damn fine welfare system. Or something functionally close to a system like that.

My point being, that I see no reason why capitalism will continue in space. Capitalism depends on resource scarcity to drive market prices, and without scarcity, markets are just fiction.

why do people assume that aliens will always be colonialist warmongers? i mean, we're still pretty barbaric but we've advanced socially enough that most people can agree that invading countries for no reason is wrong and that world peace is someting to strive for, we create things like the geneva convention to make sure wars are fought fairly and prisoners are treated humanely, how do we know aliens aren't so advanced that they are above violence now and don't need to conquer for resources because they've got all that shit figured out already?
>>
>>376126803
Depends on who gets them. If someone shares it with the entire world and shows everyone how to manufacture them, then the technology is available for all.
If someone puts a stranglehold on it, then that person will use it to leverage their power.

Either way, it would trivialize energy. Nuclear, solar, oil, coal, wind. All of it would probably shut down as we move to this miracle system that somehow ignores entropy. (Or degrades on such a slow scale that it doesn't matter to us.)
If it could be made portable, then our consumer goods would never need to be replaced due to battery failures.

So our economy would really get messed up with this discovery. But it probably would change stuff for the better.

Utopia's major addition was a Civ style perk tree so you can unlock changes for the empire. Stronger fleets, better colonization, science focus. ETC.

They also added a box for you to not purge pops but instead displace them from their home world and make them cosmic refugees. Which gives you a much less severe penalty

They won't have FTL, If they did, then that means they would arrive here without knowing that we existed before they left. Because if our radios can reach them to tell them we exist, we would be able to see their radios too. Doubly so for us because they'd have been broadcasting for far longer than we have.

So what would happen is this FTL ship would arrive in the solar system and the aliens would be like, "where the fuck did this civilisation come from? It wasn't there when we looked at this planet from 100 light years away." and then they'd be like, "Um, hi. This is a bit awkward, but we thought this planet was uninhabited." and basically either be peaceful or piss off because they didn't bring their genocide cannons with them for a simple colonisation mission.

When it comes to the fermi paradox, we often deal with things called "filters". They are hurdles that need to be passed for intelligent life to form. You could break them all up into around 50 different filters. Things like having a stable orbit, a big brother Jupiter to clean up asteriods, a nice middle range star, lots of water. Prokaryotes, eukariotes, no nearby exploding stars, ect.

We don't know the odds of each filter being passed, but lets say it was 50-50 for each. That gives a probability of P = 0.5^50. Or 1 in 1,125,899,906,842,620, which is a few thousand galaxies worth of stars, and would mean that civilisations such as ours would only be found in 1 in every 1000 galaxies. Yes, life could actually be that rare.

We have no way to launch into space, if a species can travel through space and reach out planet they wouldn't even need to land to exterminate us, they simply need to do it away from us.

Keep in mind I did select those odds arbitrarily for the sake to demonstrating the effect of compounding probability. We do not know the actual odds, since we only have one confirmed example of intelligent life existing. If you bump the odds down to each filter having a 1 in 3 chance, then the odds of life forming around any one star is 1 in a trillion trillion; more stars than exist in the observable universe, which would make humans the only intelligent life EVER. Bump the odds up to 2 in 3, and then suddenly you have around 100 civilisations per galaxy. We just don't know.

We are quite sure that other forms of intelligent life based on something besides carbon are even less likely to exist. They would in all likelyhood need to be made by carbon based life, which just adds another filter that must be passed before they form and reduces the odds of them existing. Think sentient AI. That's an alternate form of life that absolutely cannot evolve into existence on its own and would need a creator race.

>Islam has just as much ability to create a stable society if it isn't being actively destabilized by western intervention

Fundamentally wrong for a very simple reason. Islam encourages polygamy. Polygamy means that if one guy has 4 wives, there's 3 guys who have none. The only way to keep those 3 guys happy is to get more women, and the only way they can do that is through conquest. Islam without conquest burns itself up with infighting because of population imbalance.

Eradicating 'all the muslims' would kill more than a fifth of the people on Earth.

Futhermore, in the US more people were killed by toddlers with guns last year than by Islamic extremists since 2001, and more people die on the roads in a month than died in 9/11.
Meanwhile in the UK, there have been five incidents described as terrorist attacks since 2010 - three by Islamic extremists, two by right-wing extremists, for a single digit total death toll. Between the years of 1987-1992, there were more than a thousand terrorist attacks by the IRA for a death toll of over 380. At the same time various other terrorist organisations were operating throughout Europe, mostly nationalist and separatist.

The absolute rate of terrorist attacks, let alone the amount per capita, is at an all time low. Some faction had to be the last one to still be angry about something, and it turns out it was the Islamic extremists.

They could also do male infanticide, but that harms them from a military and economic standpoint because less working men means a smaller military and less workers. This will put them at a disadvantage in comparison to other societies.

Islam cannot coexist with other cultures peacefully, which is where the problemo comes in if another culture comes around. For blacks, they are... well, "not inclined" to technological progress. The only blacks that have created civilisation are the ones that evolved into other races.

Which we share most of our DNA with. There's a reason immuun system research used chimpanzees. And it still required mutations to go from siv to hiv. Disease jumping species is not common. You aren't going to make your cat sick when you have the flu. An alien isn't going to share 95% of our DNA, if they even use DNA

Islam allows and in some cultures encourages it but does not necessitate it. Eventually subgroups and Islamic cultures that adopt monogamy for the majority and limited polygamy for the highest elite will remain healthy since the Male population in a conservative society already has a higher mortality rate from workplace incidents and what not.

Terror attacks aren't the only way that Islam is bad and a net negative to society. It currently, and has since the fall of Baghdad by the Mongols for certain, promoted a fundamentalist world that has been counter active to any state of stability and progress.
Things were starting to change after European colonialism due to the inherent stabilizing nature of a colonial power in addition to the dictatorships forming continuity and stability between leaders.

That isn't entirely true. They certainly have developed at a much slower rate than the rest of the world, but there has been some, albeit slow, technological progress.
That being said most of their progress has come from outside forces stepping in and this has been true for a long time.

130 people died in the Paris attacks 1 and a half years ago. 368 more were injured. Less than a year ago, a muslim terrorist drove a truck into a crowd in Nice and killed 86 people and injuring 436 others. Do not fucking tell me that muslims haven't been killing anyone lately, Mohummed.

Neither can western culture. What's your point?

Saying blacks can't advance on their own just contributes to all the bullshit that makes them behave the way they do on top of their genetic drawbacks. Congratulations, you've played yourself.

The farming of Yams in West Africa along with some agriculture. The use of more advanced buildings in Zimbabwe along with their good forges. The trade routes along the horn of Africa with the Middle East.
Trade of Salt for Gold in Ghana centralizing around Timbuktu. I should also mention the library of Ghana as well.
