Playing in order is usually best since each game tends to build upon the last, preferably the handheld versions as they come with a bunch more content.

Depends, if you want to play them all then do it in order. Disgaea is a serie where there's not many innovations but each game improves on the former one.

I'd say the weaker ones are 3 and D2 and the stronger ones are 4 and 5.

Disgaea 1 has a DS port with an underappreciated Prinny commentary that makes it the superior version tho.
