Everything.

The dodging system is retarded. You can just tap a direction the whole time and auto-dodge without having to time it.

The first person pixel hunting sequences add nothing to the game.

First person missile aiming likewise adds nothing and just makes missiles a chore to use.

The game feels more linear than other Metroids, and most of the environments are gray corridors.

Final fight against mother brain is hyped up but then they just cut to credits and that's it.

Even without the retarded story, it's not a great game. It's not terrible, you can certainly do worse, but it's not up to the standards set by the rest of the series.

You get forced into first person mode and have to point at a specific 10x10 pixel box for a couple of seconds out of a whole area before it'll move on. It totally breaks the flow of the game and serves no purpose but to artificially drag the playtime out.

Controlling a 3D action game with a d-pad and three buttons just ends up being clunky. Having to remain stationary while using missiles made them a chore to use. The game had too many shitty pixel hunts. The music and artstyle was bland. The dodge system made the game too simple. The two core aspects of the Metroid series are exploration and isolation; Other M fails at both.

It's a mediocre game in its own right, the reason it gets called a bad game is because it's nothing like the previous entries in the series and it has a story that completely butchers Samus's character and retcons every other game in the series.

Metroid Other M isn't just linear, it commits the cardinal sin of locking doors behind you purely to force you to advance the plot as soon as possible.
In every other Metroid game, on your first run through a zone, when you see a place you can't reach, you make a note of it and come back when you have a major item that might help.
Here, you are confined to a single zone until Adam tells you to move on. You can't backtrack at your leisure, which means a lot of minor items can be missed until the post-game.

it turns out that taking a guy with no experience with 3d, and who hasn't worked on a console action game in over 20 years, and giving them a blank check is actually a really bad idea
